Well, it's not an Epi....I often wonder when, if ever, the day will come that I have an Epi with buds....
This is supposed to be Nopalxochia phyllanthoides, (and I think it is).
The funny story behind this one is that I got it in a trade on GW 4-5 years ago.
I sent this person some good stuff, and all I wanted from her was a cutting of Nopalxochia phyllanthoides.
It took months and a lot of persistence, but I finally got my cutting....it was about a whopping 1.5" long!
I know of several other people who traded with the same person and they *all * got stiffed, so I feel fortunate to have this plant today.
I babied it and babied it and began placing it outdoors in the summer two years ago.....it has really grown and woohoo!!!! It has buds!! (Can you see 'em? LOL! You should be able to if you click to enlarge.)
This was taken about a week ago...the buds have matured a little bit since then, and are looking good.....I'm excited!!
Lookie here!
Nan, I CAN see the buds! I counted 5...:) This is a great success story, Nan. Congrats and kudos to you for your hard work!!!
Nan, looks great!
I may have some epi cuttings soon, just the QOTN. Want some?
Well, the buds were so tiny at that time that I just wanted to get a shot of them (LOL!) and I could only fit one branch in the photo *and* show the buds at the same time.
There are a couple of other branches that have several buds, too.....I'm betting there's about 30 or so buds in all! And the plant isn't even all that large!
Thanks so much for the offer, darius...but some of those Epis grow so large that I have trouble finding a place for them in the winter....so I'm not planning on adding more.
I appreciate your offering, though!
If this grows a fair amount again this upcoming season, I'll share it with some of you folks.
OK Nan....so I had to look this plant up to see what your blooms were going to look like and have fallen completely in love with it *lol*.
I found only 1 place that sells it ($30 for a 6-8 inch cutting)! Hubby would completely have a stroke *lol*
So SHOULD you ever decide to put a section or 2 up for trade, would you please let me know? Maybe I have something (or a couple things) growing in this house that you would like in trade.
IF someone finds one cheaper out there would you please let me know?
Thank you so much,
Kim
Hi,
I just stumbled on this forum, so in advance, forgive me if I'm wrong about this.
Is THIS the plant you are asking about? If so, I'll be happy to share it with anyone that wants some.
I've only known this as a Night Blooming Cereus. Just recently, was informed that it's a Hook's Orchid Cactus. Now I'm hearing something else here.
Janet
Janet, That is beautiful. I would love to trade with you sometime.
Betty
Thanks Betty. I haven't done any trading, but would be happy to start with you as a guinea pig. :-) I will cut you some of it. I won't pot it up. I don't think the travelling will bother it much.
Whatchagot? :-)
I'm interested in butterfly plants. I've been collecting plants for my BF garden.
You can see other plants around my yard in my diary. I have lots of sections in my yard, so that's how I have my diary set up. I have about 90% of my plants in the diary somewhere. I haven't set up a trading list yet, but would be happy to put anything else you'd like in there too. If I don't know how to do cuttings on what you want, I'll find out how.
Janet
Nan has it bloomed for you yet? I to had to look it up. That is another gorgeous one to find.
:) Donna
Nan:
I looked it up too - "Pond Lily Cactus" .... Wow ..... what a beauty! You must post photo's when the blooms open! I want this one too!
I am going to try and find a source!
UniQue Treasures: I would love to trade for a cutting or two of yours too! Is it the same as Nan's?
Lin
Lin, when I tried to search for the name in the very begininning of this thread "Nopalxochia phyllanthoides" I couldn't find anything at all here on DG in the Plant Files. So the answer is that I don't know if mine is the same or not. I will be anxious to see more photos of this plant also, so please show us a little more of it!
However, you are most welcome to some cuttings of the Night Blooming Cereus that I have. I also have what I was told was a cousin to the NBC, the Ric Rac plant. Just send me a Dmail with shipping address and I'll get them out this week, hopefully tomorrow.
I will state up front that I'm not cinchy with my cuttings. I will have to start compacting some of them for the winter so the more I can cut, the better off I'll be. I'm happy to share, so if there's anything else you'd like, take a look at my diary. My diary is set up in sections of my yard. I have a pretty big variety of plants out there, the majority of them are in my diary. I don't have a trade list that you can look at just yet. That's on my TO DO list.... and not at the top.
Janet
Hey Janet: The one Nan has is called "Pond Lily Cactus".
I can't seem to get the copy and paste of the DG plant files URL to work. I was going to paste it here. I tried a couple of times and it didn't work, but maybe I'm just tired! Anyhow, if you go to plant files and type in the common name "Pond Lily Cactus" you will find the info and maybe you can see if it looks like yours.
I have the Ric Rac Cactus too! You can find this one in Plant files, under the common name:
"Ric Rac Orchid Cactus".
I've had my Ric Rac for a quite a few years, never noticed any blooming, but that may be because it was hiding among my MANY plants!
I have a Night Blooming Cereus "Queen of the Night" too! It was given to me back in the late 1970's!
I am of the mindset that one can never have too many plants! LOL So, if you are going to take cuttings, of any of your Epi's, I would be glad to re-imburse you for the postage! I will d-mail you with my info.
Thanks so much! And, if you are looking for anything in particular, just let me know! Would love to trade!
Lin
Janet:
I can't believe I'm still up and on the computer .... after midnight .... way past my bedtime! I just went back and re-read this thread and looked closely at your photo. That doesn't look at all like my Night Blooming Cereus. Mine has MUCH shorter stems/leaves. The flower looks similar, mine are white too, but they hang down! And, your plant looks very reddish in color .... mine is a light gray/green shade!
So, I would love cuttings if you can spare some! That is an absolutely beautiful plant!! Do you keep it in full sun? Mine is in Full shade .... maybe I should give it more sun! Your's is definitely different than the one I have.
Lin
I checked out the Pond Lily Cactus in the Plant Files. WOW!!! It's beautiful. Definitely NOT what I have. My plant (NBC) was originally all green. It's been moved several times around the yard, whenever it outgrew it's location. I've had it 3-4 years now. I've started several new plants with leaves that broke off when we transplanted it to the new containers. It's now in pretty much full sun, and in the past year, the whole plant, with the exception of new growth, has turned pink.
I've enjoyed having it outside of my back door, but I think, once again, we will most likely find another place for it and just plant it in the ground and let it grow "wild". I don't have any planters bigger than what it's in right now. That is going to be a major job for my DH this fall. I'm not about to tackle that 40 armed monster by myself!
I received several Dmails last night about it and will be happy to send out cuttings to those that asked.
Thank you for clarifying the plant that started this thread. I would love to get some cuttings of it. The flowers are absolutely breathtaking! I'll see what you have and be happy to trade for things I don't have and not worry about the postage.
Janet
I've got to tell you folks....these buds are soooooooooooooooooo incredibly slow to develop!!!
They're not a whole lot bigger than they were when I took this photo.
I have the plant on my front sunporch (unheated) and it's been getting quite cold here at night...the plant is developing some brown spots that I believe are cold damage...but the buds are still intact and getting larger.
I moved the plant further into the porch (which isn't far, at all...but closer to the interior windows where it won't get so cold) and I made sure to have it facing the same direction it was before I moved it.....so....I guess we'll see.
I haven't posted any new photos because of the incredibly slow development.
I won't be positive of it's ID until it does (if it does....knock on wood!) bloom.
Let's hope the person I traded with truly knew the ID of *her* plant.
Well, I'm disappointed, yet I'm not (LOL!!)
Turns out this is a Rhipsalis.
It seemed to be taking the flowers a *very* long time to mature (they just opened this past week) and some of the stems were developing brown spots while the plant was on my sunporch so I deduced that it was likely too cold. I was reluctant to move it (didn't want the buds to blast) but I did, and just a day or two after moving it indoors, it finally bloomed - but it bloomed the familiar white (and rather small, as opposed to the Nopalxochia blooms!) Rhipsalis blooms.
I do love (and collect) Rhipsalis, so I still love her anyway!
Sorry, not a great photo.
Nan & Mary: What beautiful plants!
Nan: Is that one of the ones you gave me cuttings from? Looks kinda familiar! I will have to go out back tomorrow and check! You gave me so many that I forget! I've made about 14 trades since my "FIRST" with you! So much fun! Everything you gave me is doing superbly well, except the Hibiscus cutting didn't make it. The Brug's are looking really good, perking up and sprouting new leaves ... and the Hoya's & Epi's are doing really great also! I am having so much fun with this website and learning so much!
Lin
They *do* look alike, MaryE!
Lin - glad to hear that everything (but the Hib - we'll have to *fix* that!) is doing well!
Trading is fun, isn't it?!
I, too, have received some great plants through trading and have 'met' wonderful people in the process.
I didn't send you cuttings of this one, as I *thought* it was Nopalxochia and it was it's first time to bloom and was / is still quite small.
So many of the Rhipsalis, especially, (but other so-called 'jungle-cacti') look so much alike!
I'm a little bummed about this, as I sent that person something really *good* for this cutting, so although I did (eventually!) get a plant out of the deal and didn't get 'stiffed' as others did, I didn't get what I'd hoped for.......aargh!
Well....someday I'll find me a Nopalxochia!
In the meantime....I'll enjoy my blooming Rhipsalis!
