Mason County Mystery

Olympia, WA

I found this shrubby tree today - and came up a complete blank as to the identification. I could have posted it in the identification forum, of course, but thought I would try the local group first. It was growing amidst a cluster of riparian type trees. There is a very black seed in the fruit - a slender seed, not a pit.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Did you taste the fruit? Also, can you post a photo of the entire tree?

Didn't taste the fruit (that never would have occurred to me - smell was nondescript) ...... and the tree is in a snarl of other things .......no sense for the general architecture of the plant whatsoever..............hmmmmmm. Looking at native plants, I can come up w/ nothing ..... at first glance, fruits not unlike Indian plum (until you open them) - but leaves not at all like those.

Hmm. I don't know if this is a native or not. I'm thinking you should post on the ID forum, or on the trees and shrubs forum. There are some extremely knowlegeable people on the trees and shrubs forum, people well known in the horticulture world. They would likely know this plant.
