Help! Which way am I supposed to plant a banana seed?

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

Hi,

This may not be the season to think tropical, but I just bought a few banana seeds and my kids and I have already soaked them and ready to plant them. However, we realized that we do not know which way to position the seeds: The smooth "dome" side up? Or the concave side (which perhaps used to be attached to a stem)? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

You can plant the seed horizontally when you can't tell which end should be up.
The seed will know what to do sending the stem up and the root down.

Just keep them warm! Some bottom heat is really important, from my one time xperience with b. seed. And still expect that some of the seed may not germinate for months.

Thank you both! The seeds are potted sideways, in pots, near a space heater (near a terrarian)--Not exactly bottom heat, though. Perhaps I should place the pots securely on top of the space heater (AND without cooking them!) My kids and I have been watering the seeds regularly to keep them moist. The pots are small, maybe 4" in diameter.

The prospect of a banana tree gets everyone excited, but the waiting time--months!--is beyond kids' grasp:-)

Hi BlueAsh -

I am sorry to hae taken so long replying to your last post. I hae not been on the DG site lately.

I am not an expert, but I would think that over but not actually on the spce heater would be wise. i just got some banana seed in the mail, so I may be comparing notes with you!

I got seed off eBay from from a person named Chris, in England. The postage isn't bad:

These are the bananas I bid on:

"Item title: GIANT SNOW BANANA**MOST UNUSUAL**4 SEEDS,DWARF CHINESE BANANA**SACRED
PLANT**4 SEEDS."

Although they may all sprout, I am cautious, and both these varieties seem like unusual and attractive, hardy bananas, so I bid and "won" a second pair of pkg.'s!

Had really friendly couple of e-mails back and forth with the seller, who was very patient with me when I couldn't work Pay Pal property!

In case the above link doesn't get you to the seller, you might connect by the following eBay I.D.: "Seller User ID: chris45610".

Best wishes,

Peter
