typing problems

Whenever I try to type a message and I misspell something, I am not able to backspace to remove the typing. I try to highlite and delete the spelling and then my cursor is in the wrong place when I type. I am typing on a IBook G4 and this is the only place that I have problems typing. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
