Geiger Tree seeds? (Hummingbird flowers)

I posted this question on the Florida plant forum and I haven't gotten a reply. So .......

Since this forum is also a hummer forum, I thought I'd ask the question here.

Can someone tell me if the fruit from the Orange Geiger Tree becomes a seed when it deteriorates? On the DG PlantFiles someone mentioned seed pods, but I have never seen any pods on my plant.

Here is a photo of what the fruit looks like depending on how many days have passed. Does anyone know if it becomes the seed after drying out?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know about the orange one, but we have a white one that locals call "wild olive" http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/2246/index.html and the fruit is fleshy, whitish, and there is a seed in the middle. It needs heat to germinate.

Calalily - Thanks! I cut one open to see and sure enough there was a seed. So I guess I just let them dry out and then plant them? It's pretty warm in my zone, so they'll get lots of heat! lol! I appreciate your help! :-)

I have never heard of one of these........................

As a rule, plants that are tropical or sub-tropical such as the geiger tree; no need to dry out the seeds. Clean the flesh off and plant immediately. The largest fruit should have the most viable seeds. Fruit that are quite a bit smaller may not have a viable seed inside and that is why the overall size of the fruit is so much smaller.

Amy - Very interesting info about the Geiger Tree seeds. I didn't know that the seeds should be planted immediately after harvesting the fruit. I thought they had to be dried first. So does that mean that any dried Geiger seeds are no longer viable? Most of my fruit looked about the same size. What size would a pollinated seed be in diameter?

Mark - This tree is very touchy about temps. If it gets to freezing the tree dies completely or dies back to the ground. This year we didn't have any freezing temps and it is growing nicely. I got it for the hummers I hope to attract to my yard some day! Supposedly they like the nectar from the orange flowers. If you want some seeds during my next fruit/seed harvest from my own tree, let me know. I can send you some. But it is a VERY tropical plant. Likes zone 10 and higher. It's a bit unpredictable even in my zone 9b.
