I recently purchased a lot of bulbs, fritillaria, chionodoxia, muscari, scilla, hispanica, Leucojum aestivum, Fritillaria persica other fritillarias, and dracunculus vulgaris. I received no directions for planting depths and haven't found any on the internet. Anyone know or where to get info on planting depths on these? I seem to remember a rule of thumb of 2 1/2 times the height of the bulb. Can I count on this rule of thumb or can I find a list of bulbs and their planting depths?
Depth of planting?
Most bulb books have a picture that shows the various planting depths. I have a favorite that is all muddy and stained because I take it out to the yard with me.

Dwerland ~ You hit a thread near and dear to me when you mentioned a favorite bulb book. Would you make a recommendation please??? Pretty please???
Yes, I don't have a bulb book and will have to buy one. Might as well start out with a good one!

This chart covers most of your bulbs...:http://www.vanengelen.com/plantingchart.html
Never heard of Hispanica, time to hit the PlantFiles!
That link is just exactly what I needed! Thank you! I had a hard time finding Hispanica in the Plant files because I am not long on taxonomy. Hispanica is the species and "Queen of Pinks" is the cultivar -- for the one I bought, but I had to try filling in the blanks a couple of ways before I got it. Anyhow, here is the link.

I think you might have cut and pasted the wrong url ? I think plant files has been acting up lately, too.
That link has a picture if anyone's interested
Hyacinthoides hispanica? as in Englsih bluebells?
The ubiquitous "A-Z Garden Plants" book has planting depth for a lot of bulbs, and is specific about Frits.
(My copy of A-Z is mud, saffron, snack, ink and tea smudged, along with being re-re-bound with duct tape.)
I guess that's the plant pajarito is referring to... B&B calls them Spanish bluebells
Kenton, that's a resounding endorsement for a book!
Thanks both of you. Yes, your like brought up the right picture. Can't explain what happened to mine. And I will definitely locate "A-Z Garden Plants" for future use.
JamesCO ~ Thank you for the book recommendation. I am getting discouraged at how few people use books for reference. I am not brilliant enough to store all the info in my pea brain. I have also been a little disappointed at how incomplete Plant Files info is and in searching the internet, have found glowing errors in regards to some plants. I am a book person and will look for this one too. Thanks much, pod
I find Plant Files wonderful, but clearly it doesn't include planting depths of bulbs which would be very helpful. Perhaps all we need to do is request that such a category be added, at least to bulbs. It isn't so necessary for most plants, but for bulbs and grafted plants it is really important. Plant Files may be incomplete, but there is no comparable alternative. Perhaps we just need to improve Plant Files.
Not to disparage books. I own many and couldn't do without them, but let's keep working on Plant Files!
pajaritomt ~ I do wish the PF would be more complete. Part of the flaw is in the contributors. If, when we post, we fail to fill in the pertinent info that will happen. And if it lack things like planting depth which is vital on most seeds, bulbs and for the novice, even plants, we need to add that in the comments section. I get frustrated when trying to ID and there are many that have no info/photos.
Yes, Plant Files are only as good as we make them. I have been adding lots of photos, but we all need to do that. I certainly don't get many opportunities to photograph tropical plants. I am actually rather impressed at the number of photos in the Plant Files. That, in fact, is how I first found DG. I kept searching the internet trying to ID various things and it seemed like most times it took me to DG's Plant Files.
But you are right, there are missing pieces all over PF. I will try to enter planting depths from time to time when I add comments.
Kenton,
I found no books called A-Z Garden Plants on Amazon or in the Bookworm. There were several names close to that. Is yours the one from the American Horticultural Society by H. Marc Cathey? That looks like a substantial tome. There are a couple of others by other authors. Could I get a little more info?
Betty
It's in the Bookworm section of dave's garden, among the top ten or twenty, and there's a link to amazon there. too. Maybe the title is off by a word or two, I'll check
Edit: I guess I didn't read your post carefully enough, but I think that's the book he's referring to - JamesCo has a review of it there

Okay, this is the American Hoticultural Society one. I will put it on my list for Santa. He loves to bring me books.
