I had a good deal come my way today, An older couple has a 30' wide by 50' long greenhouse frame that they want to sell to me for $100.00, yep I said $100.00, can't believe it, it comes with heating, fans, lights, benches etc. I don't know what it is covering it now. The question I am asking is would it be better to cover using plastic or the panels. Who has had experience with either of the coverings. Any advise would be grateful.
Thank,
Cindy
Advise on what to cover greenhouse with????
If it is some sort of hoophouse, the best to use would be double layer of 6 mil greenhouse plastic. It should be easy enough to heat in your part of the country. If you are going to use it all winter long, you may want to put in an interior wall so you only have to heat the part you need for overwintering. 30 x 50 is a lot of space. We don't heat any of our houses in the coldest months. Seeds are started in the basement, then the plants go to the greenhouse when we get crowed out. Usually after Feb 15. Sun is higher and days are longer so not as many hours to heat. I have went in the greenhouse when it's -30º outside with the sun shining & it is very warm in there.
If you decide you don't want it, send me the phone #. LOL!
Bernie
No Bernie, it is not a hoop house it a commercial style greenhouse with walls and a roof. I don't even know if the panels can be used on it. Wondering also if it is covered with plastic, could the panels be used. Do I need to purchase something to convert it to the panels. Have to really look at it next weekend when I go pick it up. With the double layer of plastic do I need to put air in between the layers? Not really familiar. I do have a small hoop house that I plan on covering this weekend,, two layers or one????? Help????
Will keep you in mind if I don't want it. LOL
A GH film with an IR additive will hold the heat in better at night than a plain polyethylene film.
Single layer poly has an R-value of about 0.8. Double layer (inflated) is about 1.4...a considerable cost savings there!: http://www.littlegreenhouse.com/guide.shtml
An air gap between the layers is important and can be maintained with a squirrel cage blower: http://www.surplussales.com/Fans-Blowers/FansBlow-1.html
Polycarbonate panels will last a lot longer.
Thanks Stress gives me something to think about
