Hibiscus Cutting in Water Is Blooming!!!

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Hi,I received 3 hibiscus cuttings about 3 weeks ago .They were about a foot long when I received them and I just stuck them in a glass of water on my plant stand to try and get them to root.Well Look whats blooming thismorning! I was shocked to say the least when I walked in the room and it said "Hello" with its lovely flower. The bloom measures about 4 1/2 to 5 inches across. What a nice thing to wake up to on a dreary cold October morning : ) Does the bloom look familiar to anyone? I would like to id it so I can write it down. Thanks for your help. Nancy

OK, I have some hibiscus plants that are SO big they really need to be trimmed back somewhat - again - and they have buds. So now I'm going out and cut some budding stems off and see if they will bloom and root. I really love hibiscus.

I'm not sure about hibiscus, but I know with other plants if you're trying to get them to root you're supposed to cut off any flowers/buds, otherwise they waste their energy on the blooms rather than growing new roots.

Thanks everyone for the compliments! For now I am just enjoying the bloom. : )
Ecrane,The silly things have rooted very well in the water and just keep putting on more buds.Should I pinch the buds all off and plant them now in pots? I have never had Hibiscus before ( I am hooked on their Beauty now) so I am clueless as to when to plant them and how.I know we are in Zone 5 so I will have to keep them in the house over winter. Does anyone know what I should do next? Thanks!! Nancy

If they're already well rooted then I don't know if you need to cut the flowers off, it's mainly if you're trying to start the cuttings that having flowers and buds is going to hurt your chances of rooting. Although if you're going to transplant them into pots that can be a little stressful too so you might want to get rid of the flower so it can focus on growing more roots once it's in the soil. Hibiscus blooms don't last that long anyway though, I say enjoy it for a couple days then plant in a pot after it's done blooming.

Thanks for the help Ecrane,I will wait for the blooms to die and then pot them up and see how they do.Thanks Again!! Nancy
