This is my Pandanus utilus planted in the ground. It made it through last winter but took some hits. Really rebounded in the heat of the summer. Any tricks on keeping it happy?
Wintering Pandanus utilus
Hits in Altadena?? how cold did it get there? I have not had a problem with this plant down to about 28F... did it get colder than that there last year? maybe it got some damage from overhead watering (can rot at the center if you do that when it's cold). Do you have it in full sun (prefers that to any shade)?
I believe it was the water mixed with cold that caused some problems. I was planning on keeping it drier this winter. It is on the southern edge of a tree canopy so that it get full sun all but the middle of the day and late afternoon. It is my understanding that many tropicals should be kept on the drier side during our "cold" months, is that correct?
Thanks,
Lonny
I think it would be best if you transplanted it to a better spot... I've got a great spot for it in one of my beds... ;^)
