Planted glad bulbs today- crazy?

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

Hi all!
I had a lot of glad bulbs that I had never put in the ground. I have absolutely no place to store bulbs. I was afraid they would dry out and die before next Spring, so I planted them today.

Will they grow next yr ...... or Am I crazy?

It would be interesting to find out. My money (at best) is that they will not flower now...they need about 80-90 days and lots of light...the days are getting shorter. You might keep them alive (if they do not freeze) and will grow again in late Spring. Any takers on my bet?

plantnut,
yeah for me to say am I crazy is really over-stating the obvious- lol!

bleek,
LOL! I know they won't flower now before frost. I am just wondering will they come back next yr? They are hardy glads and I dont have any trouble over-wintering glads in the ground. I assumed that glads are planted in the Spring for a reason. I dont think they are normally fall- planted bulbs, right?

Normally, glads are spring planted, but I've planted them almost year round, so they don't all bloom at the same time...but I'm in the tropics & frost is not an issue... I'm with you for planting them now, as long as you don't think the freeze will kill them. They can shrivel & dry out so fast - seems like too long a time to wait till spring to plant. My guess is that you just might Glads popping up next spring! Anu

berrygirl, I am betting that the bulbs will overwinter, and then start growing in the spring. I would assume that you have few freezes, as I really don't know where Braselton is. Here it would be impossible to do that, as we sometimes get hard freezes, and the glad bulbs would not survive.

Thanks all for the advice!

We do have freezes as I am about 50 mi NE of Hotlanta. But bulbs do fine here and even cannas and tuberoses stay in the ground year round. My other glads do fine also.

Hey, what happened with those fall planted glads? I have a few stragglers that aren't in the ground yet....
