The last time I saw my hummers was last Saturday, 10-7. I suppose the 8 that came on April 5th have finally decided it was time to pack-up and go south. I'm wondering if the ones that resided north of me during the spring & summer will stop by for a drink from my feeders on their way south. I'm leaving them up a while longer just in case.
Have your Hummers left yet?
I saw a couple of ruby-throats this weekend. They usually leave south Louisiana in late October. Some people have overwintering birds, including rufous and black-chinned here as well, although those are uncommon.
I miss my ruby-throats already.
Haven't seen any in a few weeks.
Yesterday there were reports of them in Ohio, New York and Pennsylvannia.
I saw 2 last week, but none so far this week...it's usually mid-Oct when the last ones drift away around here. I figure there's still a few migrating, we've still got lots of good nectar plants, but frost is forcast for the weekend.
More reports today of rubythroats in North Jersey and Pa.
our last hanger-on left about 2 weeks ago here in western NY, north of Buffalo
Here in Eastern Nebraska we saw our last one leave on October 6th.We kept telling them"You better get going" Now that they have gone there is something special missing around here.I am sure you all can relate.Oh how it makes your heart ache to see them leave : ( Nancy
You're right about that, Nancy. I already feel the void.
Isn't it funny? When you finally say "Hmmm, I haven't seen a hummer lately" and you realize they must have moved on for the year, things just start to look different.
I thought they would be around here longer but today I didn't see one. I miss them too.
Mine have been MIA for about a week. I still have feeders up for any stragglers, but I sure miss the little buddies. That was how DH and I started our day, out on the deck looking to see who was chasing whom away from the feeder that day :)
When do they usually arrive back Cordele? This was my first year with them, so I don't know when to start looking again.
~Sunny
I start seeing them again in February.
Feburary? Wow! I wonder why so early.
I miss mine too!
I haven't seen any since the wkend but I've been leaving b4 daylite this wk. I'm just hoping all that have left ya'll will stop by my place on their way south.
I've had more this yr than ever b4 but I also have more feeders, too. I've had so many that the feeders have to be filled twice a day. It was not unusual to see 20+ @ a time.
Something else that I have that gets almost as much attention fr the hummers, are my Fairy Dusters(calliandra emarginata). I have 3. Two are about 3' tall & a foot wide and very thick with leaves & blooms.
They say they are attracted to red, well, I've got some red all over my yd. This yr I bought new hoses. I got 3 - 100 ft long. When we are out watering, they come right up & get in the spray coming fr those RED hoses!!!
I still had a couple last weekend, could any of you tell the names of some plants they really enjoy I am starting a butterfly and humming burd garden! :)
Thank You
Jesse
I saw another female ruby-throat this morning. They usually leave right around this time in south Louisiana.

Here's a list with pictures that hummers like. It's not inclusive but will give you a start for hummingbird gardens.

I thought for sure that I'd have some visitors from the north migrating south via my yard....None yet. :o(
I can't believe theres still reports coming in (with photos) of hummers in Niagra Falls NY, Pa., Ohio and Michigan as of yesterday. I guess I will leave 1 feeder up till Thanksgiving.
Y'all in the warmer zones don't have them year round like we do? That's wierd. I have hummers all winter.
never seen one in the winter in g'ville...been about a month now. bummer too, since the firebushes are just covered in flowers.
All that wasted nectar, that is too bad! We must have an area specific hummer here in winter, I haven't learned which one is which but I know the Annas are very common here, must be them I see.
I know their in Melbourne, Fla.
Thank you all fo rthe info
:) Jesse
