Let's Do Some Host Plant Seed Trades! R U Ready?

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

All are invited to join in the 'trading' whether new to butterfly gardening or experienced, whether ignorant about seed collecting or savvy to all the skills.

The point of the thread is to introduce others to the fun and satisfaction of Butterfly Gardening, to improve our own gardens and our knowledge of butterflies, and to have some fun!

The usual seed trading courtesies will be expected. (I am not sure what they are, but I am sure others will tell you!)

If you have questions, please ask them on our discussion thread http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/656598/ and keep your posts here to the absolute minimum. If you want to set up details of a trade, please send a D-mail.

This thread is for stating your HAVES and WANTS.

This trade thread is for seeds/cuttings of butterfly HOST plants only. (We will trade nectaring plant seeds later this season.) If you are not familiar with Butterfly HOST plants, check out this Host plant list compiled by Larry Gene for Garden Web's FAQ. http://davesgarden.com/journal/d/t/tabasco/4450/ . ( Host plants are the particular plants that a butterfly species will use to lay eggs on and where the caterpillers will feed. If you have the right host plants in your garden many beautiful butterflies will call your garden home.)

So let's get started!

Hi Tabasco,

I should have read your post more carefully--I just noticed that you mentioned that this for host plants only. In that case, I have:

Mexican milkweed (9 offers, 2 for trade only)
Italian flatleaf parsely (4 offers, trade or SASBE)
Passiflora incarnata (4 offers, 2 for trade only).

My wants are as above.

If anyone has D-mailed me a request for any of the other "haves" I listed above, don't worry--I'll send them.

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

After thinking I have nothing in this category I forgot I should have some A. watsonii seeds available. I will check when I go home today to make sure.

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

Okay, I will join in. I have so much, but dont need a thing.

Haves
Milkweed seed
Cassia alata seed
passionflower Incense (soon)

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

I will also join in. I have a "young" garden, so I don't have a lot of seeds .... yet.
It is still very warm here in my area/zone, so more seeds may develope over the next 2 months. (But not sure.)

Here's my very short list of seeds that I currently have:

Scarlet Milkweed (Monarch butterflies)
Dill (Black Swallowtail butterflies)

I'd love some Cassia, spice bush, pawpaw, wild lime.

D-mail me on any of these!
Thank you!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

I have tons of Cassia Alata(Sulphurs) and Aristolochia fimbriata(Pipevine) seed. Hoping my 1 A. Elegans pod makes it. Have some Clitoria mixed(Blue, Dbl Blue, & White) and lots of Vignea Luteola (Hairy Cowpea vine) for Skippers. D-mail me for trade or SASBE. Have some other seed for nectar plants. Been a slow year for me just starting over in a new place with drought for most of the spring and summer

Salt Lake City, UT(Zone 6a)

Have:
Showy Milkweed (Asclepias speciosa)
willow (weeping and french)(also have globe and weeping talk about easy to root)
Not sure how much parsley seed I have tried to deadhead due to someone telling me it can be pretty agressive.

Do not want any weeds - have enough all ready - keep that bermuda grass and the like away.

Since I am very new to this - you people lured me in I was just here for the hummingbirds.....I am wondering about region - no sense in me planting a host plant for some species that will never visit me.....so I guess I am asking for help where it comes to my "wants"

Will gladly send willow cuttings and milkweed seed to anyone - just dmail me

Thanks
Nadine

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Donna, do you know if there are certain Skippers that use the Hairy Cowpea? Is the Clitoria a host plant for anything or just a nectar plant? It's a vine? It's very pretty. I couldn't find the HC in the Plant Files tho.

I don't do a lot of trading so I'm just starting to see the "SASBE" instead of a regular envelope. Why is this? I'm not sure how this works.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Sliver-spotted and Long-tailed but mostly the Silver-spotted for Vigna. Long-tailed perfers the clitoria best but uses both when I plant them together

Use of bubble envie helps keep seeds from getting crushed in the machines. If very small or flat seeds like aristolochia or salvia regular envie is fine but like clitoria or cassia alata they could get crushed in the sorting machine

St Augustine, FL(Zone 9a)

Donna B. I just looked at my seed package and it appears that I have Ipomoea sloteri instead of Ipomoea quamoclit. Both attract butterflies and hummers. Do you still want some? Karen

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Nadine! Nice to meet you! I hope we can all help you with the varieties of BFs you get in UT. That is a beautiful part of the country I hear. I also love having the hummers too. They seem to like many of the same plants as BFs, amd later on we will be really digging into the nectar plants, and boy I have a lot of seeds for those. So you already have Milkweed...did you have many Monarchs over this year? What kinds of BFs have you seen there so far? Sorry, I don't want to ask so many questions at once..I will stop here LOL..
