Can anyone ID this... eating my sweet potato vines

Bartlesville, OK(Zone 6a)

I 'had' a big lush sweet potato vine that is now a skeleton. Guess it's getting ready for Halloween. LOL

Anyway, I thought I would see if I could spot the little green caterpillar that I thought was eating it. This is what I found. It is not green and it is NOT little.

I would like to know what it is before and if I dispose of it. We have lots of woods to take it to, but if it is a bad one I won't do it.

Thanks!
Susan

In the house with some sweet potato vine leaves in case he needs another snack. He should be full, cause I don't have any leaves on the vine where I found him. LOL

That surely does look like a slug to me. Step on it! Yuck!!!

NO, no no, not a slug. It is a huge caterpillar, has a horn on it's tail. It is a caterpillar for a large butterfly. But I just want to know what kind. LOL

Maybe a tomato hornworm? Does it have V's on its sides? Can you show a pic of it on its side?

Bartlesville, OK(Zone 6a)

I thought tomato worms were green??? I'll try to get another picture. :-)

Yeah, I think you're right, they're green not brown.

If it has a horn on its tail, it is probably one of the (beautiful) sphinx moths. Karen

Here it is on it's side (sort of)...

Oh, thank God I didn't take all my vines out today! I planted to cover some spots and it did just that and much more so I cut a lot of it off today. I'll go inspect those pieces tomorrow for any cats since I do see the moths. :)

I had the same results with my blackie sweet potato vine..filled in and then some......have lots of cuttings that root easily if anyone wants to trade something.....I haven't had the cat on them, nothing seems to have eaten them. I have lots of the tomato hornworm that makes the sphinx moth , but have not seen this pink-spotted hawk moth.

Wow! That's a beautiful moth. I'll take that any day!!

Well, I released the 'pretty' guy this morning. I got to feelin' guilty for keeping him in the house in a dish.

Why?????

So, I put him back in the pot of sweet potato vines where I found him, so he can finish them off and prepare himself for the winter. LOL They are going to be done soon anyway, so what the hey...

I hope I see him when he's that beautiful moth.
