Is my Dr. Seuss sick?

St. Paul, MN(Zone 4b)

Hello All.

Ever since I noticed "issues" with my Dr. Seuss a couple months back, I have kept it well away from my other Brugs. Here is a picture of some lower stems on the plant. None of my other Brugs have stems like this. Is my Dr. Seuss sick? Or does it naturally get corky like this? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Oh yuck. I don't know what it's got but I would toss it and the soil it's in. Then I would use a 15% clorox solution to soak the pot for several hours.

If you want to try to save it you could probably do research at either of the Brugmansia Society's websites. We are forbidden to link to their websites or mention them because there were severe problems/conflicts between the two that adversely affected this forum. See the sticky thread on the top of the forum main page.

I'm so sorry.

WEll, isn't that strange, I"ve not seen anything like your stems before. But your leaves. The marks on the stems of the leaves, that looks kind of like the beginnings of stem rot.

This is an easy enough brug to replace Eric I'd toss it out and dump the pot with it. My opinion though.

Gee Erick, I have no clue what is wrong with it. I wonder if that is cork on the bark which supposedly is OK to have. But I have never heard that cork caused weird leaves. The black on the leaf stems looks bad and not a good thing to have. Are all your nodes clean? No blackened areas around some of them?

The other troubling thing is that yellow multihybrids like yours are prone to bad fungal diseases. So with that info, the dark spots and the werid leaves, I would bag and toss the plant, dirt and pot. You sure do not want to overwinter it with other plants inside.

The good news is Dr. Seuss is fairly easy to get, so hopefully you can get a cutting next spring and start over.

If you use clippers on it, boil them for 5 miuntes. And just in case it is bad, you shouldn't touch your other brugs without washing your clothes and hands and arms well.

As usual, I can count on the many experts here for great advice. Thank you all. I have already sealed the Dr. in a plastic bag, pot and soil included, and placed it in the dumpster. There is just no reason to take a chance.

Thank you again,

Erick

Eric, If I had a Dr. Suess in my collection, i'd send you a cutting, unfortunately, I don't have it. I did have it at one time a couple years ago, it passed away too.

Eric I will send you a cutting when I cut mine back or will send you a cutting next spring when it starts putting out new growth for postage. LMK.
It was my first brug and came from Calalily, Susie. Where is that girl anyway?

I will tell her you are looking for her,Jim. I do not think she is even posting on the tropical forum. Her life is very, very busy and changing. I miss her on here too but do chat with her off here.

Great Erick, you will be taken care of or you might opt to try some other brug. That is what I do, I keep trying new ones for I do not have the room to keep all the oldie goldies too.

Sadly, it seems 99% of the long time experienced brug growers have left DG.

Erick, it just so happens we are expecting a freeze this weekend and I had some cuttings I had promised that I will be shipping in the morning. I happen to have taken a whole shoot from my Dr. Seuss plus others and still have some left if you would like for SASE. Just D mail me.

Well, I will withdraw my offer above and Dott you are so kind. Sorry to have taken up the space by posting.

Georgiaredclay,

I sincerely apologize. I overlooked your posting when I responded to Dott. I try to acknowledge and appreciate every kind comment and offer when I initiate a thread, but I dropped the ball this time. It seemed that Dott had cuttings all ready to send, and she has shared cuttings with me in the past, so I accepted the offer without thinking. It was rude of me not to accept and express gratitude for your prior offer, and for that I am sorry.

By the way, Susie (Calalily) has also been kind in sharing with me in the past. I hope she is doing well.

Kind regards from St. Paul, which will experience the first freeze of the season tonight.

Sorry Georgiaredclay. I have this big main trunk just sitting in a vase with some others that I cut yesterday. I still have yet another trunk to go since I can't keep the whole thing. Time is working against me at the moment and I must find new homes for them.

Appreciate the apology. Accepted.
Dott no reflection on your kindness in my remark.

A little side story on Calylily. Susie sent me several brugs when I first started growing along with several other plants. At the first Dave Roundup she was there and brought this enormous arrangement of different plants to give away as a door prize. The way the door prize worked was if your name was drawn you got to pick a prize. Oh yeah I was the first name drawn. I was so glad to get the arrangement, not because of the arrangement but because it was from Susie. Just a sweet girl. Always giving.

I first met Susie when she sent me HG and other brugs when we didn't even know each other. That was when HG was so hard to get too. A friend I had met on GW knew how disappointed I had been with my order at a brug nursery that had accepted orders then not sent the plants. The brugs on order had been my Christmas present from my husband.

So this friend emailed Susie and the next thing I knew I had a box of brug cuttings. Later on I joined Dave's and met her and she taught me most of what I know about brugs. I was so pathetic in peeling seeds, she even peeled my brug seeds before she sent them to me. LOL. What a friend. Even now when I get into brug trouble, I go to Susie for advice. She was a light in all the forums, always sharing, always friendly and always so smart. She used to have us all doing experiments on brugs too. So much fun. And she tells the best stories too. LOL She can almost get me to believe anything she makes up. Sad but true. LOL
