stupid question?

North Augusta, ON

Hi all, was wondering what would happen if you didn't remove the suckers from a violet? Can they be left to grow on? Will they bloom still attached to the parent? Or is the removal of them for aesthetics only? Thanks..LeeAnne

Per Helen Van Pelt Wilson in her AV book, you do not have to remove suckers, unless you're going to show it. Her opinion is that if you like the fuller look, it's fine to leave them. That being said, I believe they do tend to bloom better if the suckers are removed. I'm not an expert, but an expert will come along and correct me if I'm wrong. :o) I think the suckers will bloom while attached to the parent as well...
Oh, and by the way, there is no such thing as a stupid question! Ask away! :o)

Amy is right. It's an aesthetical thing, although if the plant seems to be forever forming suckers and never blooming, then it might be a good idea to (first make sure it's getting enough light and then) remove the suckers. And of course, some AVs are supposed to sucker. (aka trailing AVs)

Thank you both, I was asking because I have a beautiful violet blooming now..it has a nice healthy sucker..I don't mind the look, we will see if it blooms, at least I know I have options.

Yes all the above. If youlike your plant with suckers more than one plant in a pot ! And your not showing it . Grow it anyway that makes you Happy ! And that book Amy mention says " Don't let anyone tell you that you can't grow your your plant with more than one sucker if you enjoy them like this " !!!
