And so what is it? One of those tulip trees? Purdy!!!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I believe it is a Chorisia speciosa.

Ok, I just looked it up and the trunk reminded me of a tree I saw at the Disneyland Hotel last year, must be the same thing. very cool

Oh yeah, that's too beautiful......

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

That Disney tree trunk looks like a Kapok...I have one...ouch!

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

WOW! That is gorgeous!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Sue, this one had no thorns so it must be the the Majestic Beauty cultivar which has no thorns like the other Chlorisia speciosa trees that have huge thorns along its trunk. It is grown primarily in Northern California.

ooooooooo, ahhhhh......that's one of my favorite large tropicals!

Key West, FL(Zone 11)

Wow, what a beauty
How big do they get.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Good job on that last photo Kell.

Primarily in Northern California??

Does that mean it might like it here in Texas??

I think this one tolerates a little lower temps, Seedpicker.

Tolerates as low as 20 to 30 degrees and is a moderate grower to 35 to 40 ft. tall, 30 to 35 ft. wide.

That looks like a silk floss tree. Did the trunk have thorns on it. If so that is the common name for it. We have one in our neighborhood and its very pretty. Blooms for over a month. Flowers only last one day like a Hibiscus. But the trunk is covered with thorns . Very hard to get seeds to germinate and the owner has not had any luck in rooting any cuttings either. Fran

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

It is a silk floss tree, Fran but a cultivar that has no thorns on its trunk. It is better from what I read to buy one grafted instead of seed grown because it blooms much faster.

Gorgeous tree. Too bad it is about 10 degrees beyond my zone...

I've actually gotten seeds to germinate without too much trouble--it was 2 yrs ago so I can't remember if I soaked them or not, but I got a pretty decent germination rate and have a couple 2 yr old plants now. It supposedly takes ~10 yrs or so to bloom starting from seed though, so I'll have to be patient! I think mine is the thorny one too although it doesn't have any yet.

I have been after this tree for ages. Does anyone have seed they could swap?

I'm begging someone to send some. I do have one person that maybe be able to get me some if they set seed for them. But it something i can't leave to chance! Lol

Please Dmail if you have. Thanks Mike

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I think I got mine from Seedman.com if you don't find anyone who has some to trade.

Orlando, FL

Well. i can send you some seeds but I never had any luck with them. I was told to prick the seeds before planting but the fact is the seed dry up to a little bitty thing. So if you want some fresh seeds before they dry I can send some for the postage. The tree around here is just about finished blooming. Fran

If anyone figures out where to purchase this variety please let me know.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

You mean the thornless one? Most of the nurseries around here carry Monrovia plants, so if the same is true in your area they should be able to order one for you without too much trouble, I've always had good luck with special orders when it's a wholesaler who they already order from.

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

Kell, did you see that tree in the Lakeside Palmetum in Oakland by any chance?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I did, I did! I went to visit the vireyas and this find was a added thrill.

I have one (Chlorisia speciosa) I started from seed that is now about 7 ft tall and still in the pot. It will be going in the ground in the next week or 2 now that the soil is cooling off some. So far, no thorns on the trunk.

Yeah, it's a nice one.. When I was there two weeks ago it wasn't blooming yet, I was wondering what the blooms were going to look like.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Are you referring to the vireya, GreenEyedGuru?

They had a few in bloom. I even crosspollinated 2 while there. I hope it sets seeds. I was hoping to catch the guy there who takes care of the vireyas, I hear he goes in on Tuesdays.

I crossed the orange/yellow one above with this one. LOL. I am so bad.

No, I was talking about the Chorisia.

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

I bought a Chorisia this year on e-bay and it's doing very well. It's about 6' tall now (in a pot) but it does have thorns. Do you think I might see a bloom this year? Kell, that picture is beautiful!

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

All i want for Xmas is a Chorisia.

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

I just moved mine from the back yard to the front in anticipation of finally planting it. As I started to move it, I noticed it had it's first thorn. Now to decide exactly where to place it. My front yard is not huge and I don't want it too close to the house. No matter where I put it, it will end up eventually growing over either the sidewalk or the driveway I really wish I had a larger yard

I wish this one came in a dwarf variety too.
