Anyone seen this around?

I just happen to come across this in the Botanical Gardens in Napier, NZ last week. The plant is HUGE, the flowers exotic and....a n d...in seed......? Wondered if it is common in the US?

Wow, just stunning. Never heard of it; thanks for sharing that site, it sure would look beautiful in my garden. But, it takes 13 years to flower? At my age I might never see it bloom. :-)))))

Carol, it's not common, but you will find them occasionaly in CA. They do get huge, don't they? I have one in a one gallon pot that I was going to plant out in the garden, but the eventual size has put me off. That wouldn't be a problem for a while if they were grown... from... seed...

Isn't it gorgeous, Carol! I had seen seeds for sale from someone in Australia. I was going to bid on them and forgot.

That is too cool, getting to do spring twice. LOL Great plants there?

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Not a lot of 'tropicals' as we know them...but lots of Tree Ferns, tons of different Flax blooming, Rhodies, Azaleas, fruit trees....much more temperate here: roses, hydrangeas, clematis, wisterias....lovely neat manicured gardens!!!

Gotta wait until i get home to download the camera.... I just planted some Heliotrope in my friends' garden...I never knew it had such a DEVINE fragrance...like babypowder!!!

I grow a small plant of this. I grew it from seeds out of Cali. It is australian native and I have photos somewhere of them around 7 to 8 feet tall. At first glance I thought it was a from of new zenland flax but when I got closer noticed it was totally different. Very uncommon to find.

Brian...how did you grow your seed? Did you cover with any medium or just put on the top of the pot. Has it taken 13 years to bloom... how quickly has it grown to a large size?

The plantings here are unusual...lots of grasses and flax, very temperate plants like red maples and rhododendrons, Daphne, Heliotrope, bulbs, camillias, agapanthus...palms, ferns, canna...stone fruit trees...a real blend and very attractive. Lots of contrasts of greens, textures, leaf shapes

I would have to say that in TX it's not common- have never seen it that I am aware. Very beautiful!
