First frost in Goderich/Blyth Ontario

Blyth, ON(Zone 5b)

We weren't supposed to get frost last night, but something told me differently. Thank goodness I listened to myself and brought my brugmansia and begonia inside the garage for the night. Every roof in the village was pure white when we got up this morning.

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

First light frost in Nichols Iowa! Nothing tender (callas, glads, dahlias) were affected. An early Spring here usually means an early freeze.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

First frost in Ottawa this morning. Light, I think. Will have to have a look. Leaves on tress may protect some plants for awhile yet.

Looks like it's that time of the year all over - Blyth, Iowa, Ottawa, and definitely our friends further west. We got frost again last night too. I was thinking it was a good week or two early, but it's not. Normal first frost date for us is anytime October 6, give or take a day or two. LOL My memory always seems to fail me on those things I'd rather not think about!

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

We had frost the last week of Sept. The elephant ears lost the two leaves farthest from the garage wall. I could see it on the morning glories too but that's abt it. Our frost date is usually the last of Sept., around the 25th so it was right on target. None now till midweek is predicted.

Blyth, ON(Zone 5b)

Kind of off topic, but you know, I like having our friends from the U.S. join us over here and weigh in on our discussions. Thanks for coming in kooger and billyporter. --Ginny

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

We've been having light frosts off and on for some time in my part of the city but no hard filling frost yet. Lots ofthings in the garden still looking good although we have lost a lot of the leaves from the shrubs and trees during a few days of rain and wind last week.

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

Being a citizen, I lurk on the Canadian forum quite a bit. Also hold Dutch citizenship. :)

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

What... You miss the cols, Kooger??? 4b isn't soo far off 2b. BTW, were you able to travel N. this summer after you fixed exerything?

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

Nah, still home bound, can't even drive yet. DH hopes to go in abt a month when I'm cleared to travel. DS from Vancouver and Wisconsin are coming in Nov to visit. YEAH!!

Orangeville, ON(Zone 4b)

No frost here yet and none predicted for the next 7 days according to the weather network.
Ginny, the weather was wonderful in your neck of the woods this weekend! We took in a play at Stratford, then stayed at a place in Goderich so that we could go on a mini hike at the Falls Park Conservation area today.
Lovely weather for October.

Blyth, ON(Zone 5b)

Ahhhh, I didn't realize you were a citizen kooger, and a Dutch citizen too! My family history on my mother's side goes back to the Netherlands and a United Empire Loyalist by the name of Johann Powley (Pauli). LOL Not a very loyal loyalist though - he hiked it on up to Canada to live with the natives during the war so he wouldn't have to fight, then went back when it was all over.

It sure has been gorgeous weather for October Erynne! The day time temps have been more than generous with us.

When you were in Goderich you were only about 20-25 minutes west of us. If you will be coming my way again, and you have the time, it would be great to get together. I hope you enjoyed your hike - that's nice country for it.

Got into the garden yesterday and happy to report no damage from the light frost we had a couple days earllier - well maybe just the very tips of some of my Impatiens, but trees and buildings have, so far, protected things. However, we HAVE pulled out the tomatoes. Most were rotting before they finished ripening and those that did ripen didn't have half the flavour of those from a month ago. I think I mourn the loss of tomato season the most - even above the decline of my precious hostas. With a bit of luck we'll have a couple more weeks of decent weather. Hope you're all having a great Thanksgiving.

Ginny, your family history sounds like mine with regards to Dutch ancestry and United Empire Loyalists. Apparently mine came to Canada from the US in the late 1700s, set up shop in Ontario and were alloted crown land.
Next time we pass your way, I'll definitely give you a heads up for a get together....sounds fun!

Well, it's rain, rain and more rain today. I think I have a little leak in my roof :(

Blyth, ON(Zone 5b)

Well isn't that an interesting coincidence? What fun - we can compare both gardening and genealogical notes! Another interesting coincidence is that my brother-in-law's wife is dutch - actually 1st generation Canadian from dutch immigrant parents.

I hope nothing gets damaged Erynne, but the rain, rain, and more rain sure sounds better to me than the wet snow flurries forecast for tomorrow and Friday! Nooooooooo, it can't be, tell me I'm just dreaming, I'm not ready for this yet....

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Just a lurker from SW Canada. I was up in Edmonton last week and enjoyed the warm sun (MIXED WITH SNOW COLD RAIN AND CLOUDS). On my way home I encountered Sunday snow from southern Alberta through Customs to East Glacier. It was beautiful and made the Longfellow poems of Gitchigumi alive again. Jagonjune was the most spectacular host one could have. Oh I think the Oilers beat Calgary is that possible? One from the new SW province of Montana.

Blyth, ON(Zone 5b)

Oh goodie! Montana makes a lovely addition to our western territories. Only now we'll have to learn a new acronym - BASMO (BC, AB, SK, MB, ON) will have to become BAMSMO (BC, AB, MT, SK, MB, ON), or something like that :-)

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Glad to see your trip went very well Sofer (except maybe for the temps? ;). No snow here yet Ü but we certainly had a hard freeze last night.....two weeks ago we had a little more than a touch but I'm sure even the protected annuals are mush now.

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

Snow on the cars this morning - it melted on the ground but it got down to 20º F. I got all the tomatoes and cabbage and celery picked. Had to run out at 12:30 am to pull up the celery because I forgot abt them. Brrrr!

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Darn weather warmed up here and its fall again. I can't wait for the snow!

sure

Snow squalls here today. Got schmucked in the face by a bunch of fast moving flurries as I stepped out of the truck tonight :O
Time for those unattractive but oh-so-warm flannel jammies!

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

My mom in Michigan got th same blast.

I saw the snowstorms on the TV this morning. My daughter is outside of Barrie, tried calling this morning but she must be at work. We're still in shorts out here.

Blyth, ON(Zone 5b)

Grrrrrrrrrrr. I will not be zone envious. I will not be zone envious. I will not.......oh, what the heck. I AM zone envious :-)

As are we. (In shorts, I mean) High of 21 C here today. We have had a wonderful Indian Summer. All my flowers and plants are looking beautiful.

But I hear an ill wind will be bringing a drastic change by next mid week. :(

We are burdened with continuing sunny warm weather in SW Canada. 18C today high but we did get a little frost last night. "Oh the first snow fall of the winter......"

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

We froze the 12th, 13th, and 14th. Very early for us. As soon as it warms up, I'll be digging the dahlias, glads and callas. Indian summer will be comming soon!
