Guess I harvest tomorrow

We're going to have a hard freeze in the middle of next week, so even though my potato plants are still green, I'm assuming I'd better harvest them this weekend before they freeze. Yes?

The zucchini and the broccoli are a lost cause for this year, I figure.

Might as well. They will keep in the ground until spring when they sprout again, but if you want to harvest them you should do so before the ground freezes solid.

I didn't harvest at that time, but I'm thinking of doing it this Sunday. I've heard, though, that potatoes should dry out before you dig them up. That is, go for several days without rain. But it's going to rain tonight and tomorrow (or snow, whatever). Can I still dig them up? Waiting for a rainless, snowless week and then a weekend to harvest might well take me till next spring.

Personally, I follow the old adage. "never believe half of what you read and none of what you hear." I dig them when when it suits me. If you have a heavy soil, it might take a little more effort to wash them, but it wont hurt the potatoes. It is necessary to spread them out to dry tho. Bushel baskets or crates in a shed or garage will work. Just need circulation of dry air around them. The advantage to dry digging is you don't have to wash them before storing, although many folks do.
