Finally a Smokey Mountain bloom!

New Orleans, LA(Zone 8b)

And it looks like neither the pic on the Exotic Hibiscus site, nor the one in Plant Files. But it's beautiful, huge, and after making me wait all year it's rewarded me by having 6 more buds on.

It's a good thing it lives at the entrance to my office or I'd never have seen it :)

And it has the strangest, tiniest petaloids...

Wow that sure is one georgeous flower!!!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

What a beautiful flower. Tess, you are leading me astray - again. LOL

New Orleans, LA(Zone 8b)

Aw, c'mon Alice, I've been a good girl...for a little while, anyway! I haven't been around to make trouble...which makes it easier to be good...lol...I *do* have about 5 sets of pics for new babies to put up, tho...;)

San Bernardino, CA(Zone 8b)

Super pretty bloom, Tess. I really like your side-angle pic :-) The colors on this one are soft and lovely. I want to see the babies' pics. I've got 6 babies all sitting on a row too.

Olathe, KS(Zone 6a)

That is a beauty for sure. I have the same one I bought in a coop via here and it has a different name, "Cloud Nine"
Do you think this is the same?
I bought close to 15 varieties in that coop and none of them came with any latin names, just the "nicknames" or what ever they call that.
Tell me what you think.

Tess, very nice color...my cutting is rooted now so I can enjoy it also. Thanks for sharing.

Kyle :-)

New Orleans, LA(Zone 8b)

JD I had a Cloud Nine before Katrina, and it's not the same plant at all- the leaves are different, as are the way the petals unfurl and are very wrinkly/ruffly/veiny. They do both have that same nice deep blue purple centers, and I just might have to get another Cloud Nine in the spring...just for comparison purposes you understand...lol...

Kyle- sorry I fell off the face of the earth- glad yours got rooted! The white one you sent to me is fabulous- blooms cheerfully and constantly!

Tess just figured yu was busy.. :-)

Mol, Belgium(Zone 8a)

JD, your bloom reminds a bit to Buckeye Colors. I had Cloud Nine (it isn't the one you show) and I have Smokey Mountain. They're totally different.

Hi,
I just love that Hibiscus. I love the colors.

Do you know what it is? It looks very close to the " 4th of July "
I think I will have to find that one.
Thanks for sharing,

With all the variation in colors for the "same" named H, I'm wondering if the soil or water has something to do w/that: acid, alkaline, salt - whatever. A leaf study might show a variation in the cultivar.

Mol, Belgium(Zone 8a)

Ann, from what I know, variations in color is due mainly to light conditions. That means a same cultivar looks like different regarding to the season of the year and the place where it's grown. In the Tropics, where the climate doesn't change throughout the year, the blooms don't change in color and they are brighter than in Europe, for example.
Another factor, human in this case, to enhance colors is an excesive dose of potassium.

Hmmmmm, you mean a sprinkle of greensand in the pot will enhance the colors? Mad scientist's brain (if I had one) at work here. Oh, I have got to try that and see what happens.........:-)

Katy, TX(Zone 8b)

Carlos, you make excellent sense. I have never bought anything exotic (Hibiscus-wise) just colors I liked and they always came true. Too, I buy from local nurseries and don't mailorder since I am a firm believer that if I have to pamper it too much it wasn't meant to be here. I don't have the inclination/space/stamina to be moving stuff around.

I too have noticed a HUGE difference in colors with light variation. I have several tropicals that have bloomed since I brought them indoors for the winter. The colors vary greatly and many are also much bigger than when outdoors.

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

Tess, mind if I ask where you got this one at.

I'm thinking I may have to purchase a couple , i'm new to tropical hibiscus I have the silverqueen but don't do a good job rooting it

Hey Kathy, and welcome to a new addiction...lol...

This one came from here: http://www.exotichibiscus.com/catalog_process.cfm?cid=15 , Exotic Hibiscus. My only warning is to be very careful with his liners, as tempting as they are. They are tiny, not very well rooted, and very easily killed. If you find one you really like, get the quart size and you'll have a much better success rate.

Good luck, and again, welcome!

Fort McCoy, FL

That flower is absolutley gorgeous. This is my first time growing anything in FL. Squirrels have eaten me 2 Hibiscus down to the stalks. When is the correct time to cut them back? Also, do I take cuttings to produce new plants. Thanks for any help you can give.

LOL, I said I had silver queen, it's snow queen, sorry about that.

and I did bite the bullet and order from 2 diff places, I ordered 5 from hidden valley
and I wanted to try the liners at exotic hibiscus so I ordered l2 liners from them, I hope I don't kill them.

Any thoughts on watering them? I have recently watered some other very tiny newbies with a gallon jug of water mixed with vitamin b , l/4 asperin and a tad of hydrogen peroxide, recipe given to me by the person who sent me the plants. Will this work for those liners too?

thanks

I ordered the cloud nine and smokey mountain as well as quite a few others, LOL will have plenty to do this winter

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

Nice!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Very pretty. I gave all but two of my hibiscus away last year because I was sure I could get liners again this year and it didn't happen. Now, I have to get started all over again. Nice bloom. Very nice!!
