Here is my new Sanseveria cylindrica v.Skyline. It reminds me of the crown on the statue of liberty! Cool plant!
New Sanseveria
Hmmmm...guess I am the only one that thinks it's cool!! LOL!!
LOL, No. I think it is cool too. I love the color and shape of the stems (branches ?). How tall does it get? I am envisioning it in a tropical bed next summer.
I think it is so cool too. I have only seen small ones in 4 inch pots here for sale. I love it.
Thanks Ardesia and Kell! I don't know how big it gets Ardesia? I wish I did! When I got it at Walmart...of all places...I asked Bluesea..a member here if he had any idea what it was..because I didn't. The only name on the pot was Cylandrica...which was, in fact, spelled wrong! But he happened to know about it. He also told me it was being marketed at mostly northern Walmarts and Home Depots right now.
It really is a very unusual plant. The "stems"? are very firm..and unlike anything in the plant world that I had seen...which is why I had to have it...LOL! It is about 3 ft. tall right now. I noticed some of the other ones at the store had babies coming up too...so I rather imagine it mulitiplies as Sanseverias do!
It clumps eventually like other sanseverias...I just saw these in Omaha today at Walmart, wonder where they ever found this many of this size to sell.?
Hi Kyle,
Bluesea told me they came out of Thailand...lots and lots of them!
Ohhh...and Ardesia, I plan to put this in MY tropical garden next summer! All my tropicals are now inside...that garden is close to bare. Whaaaaaaa!! Come on Spring!!!!
Interesting, wonder how Walmart got them all thru customs... LOL I can't even get seeds from Thailand without all kinds of paperwork
Kyle ;-)
I may need to go to Walmart! But ours has a bad garden department. A 3 foot one would be hard to walk away from!
Another big (really huge) sigh here. Our WalMart doesn't get good plants either. When it comes to where you live there are always trade offs. It's a good thing I have good friends to send me plants.
I saw a bunch at HD. Also wanted to add that I saw a pic (while googling for something or other) where a young guy was standing by one that was almost as tall as he was, 65-72" tall. I don't know it there is a sans. cylindrica gigantea or this was just how big the plant gets. It was the coolest thing.
Also, be sure and ck Lowes. My local store has all the tropicals at 75% because they're needing the space for Christmas stuff. (You know the holidays are about 10 weeks away, don't you?)
Shhhhhhhhh, I am not ready to think about the holidays.
Oh my! Vossner....I don't want to think holidays either...!!!! LOL...I want spring! And oh my gosh....I will have to have a special room for the sans if it gets THAT tall!!
Kyle...maybe Bluesea will see this and tell us more???
I know Lowes had them earlier this year, my garden buddy just HAD to get me one, cause he knew I didn't have one. I repotted and It has grown about 6 inches, maybe, this summer. It's about 2-3 ft tall, now. Christmas? What's that, a new plant? (expect our first frost this week, still in denial that winter is just around the corner). They start putting out the Christmas stuff in July in some stores around here....
Oh I know Aunt B...isn't it disgusting that they start so early? I, too, am in denial about winter! I absolutely don't like cold weather at all! I heard we could have our first snow flurries by the end of this week!!! YUK!!!!!!!
Well here I thought I had something unusual...lol. Guess I missed them at Lowe's.
they are unusual and beautiful! Well, I am a sans. nut so it may be a slightly biased opinion, lol. This is the first year I have seen "cylindrica" distributed in places other than specialty nurseries. I bought my cylindrica 2 yrs ago and it was not exactly cheap.
Also, I have noticed that growers will grow a ton of a certain variety of plant (at good prices), then it will be years before they grow it again--leaving people crazy looking for it. This strategy makes a plant highly desirable among gardener/collectors. Maybe it's not a strategy at all and simply that one year they got lucky getting seeds/cuttings to take and most years they don't. Who knows.
Enjoy your plant Marcy
Marcy,
Thats a cool one, I have these in my yard and never pay much atention to themand dont know much about them . Mine are more flat spear shape some are variegated and they grow straight up not like Miss Liberties crown but i like the cone shape of yours. I believe you can cut the tips off to start new plants but I wonder would the severed part re groe to a point or would you forever have a decapitated limb?
Thanks Vossner!
Well Celt, one of the tips on this plant had been severed. It healed over..but.......I think it will stay that way!
I love the cylindrical sans. HD has a bunch of the big ones like yours. They're $25 for one plant, so I haven't bought it...yet. I have several other cylindrical ones and one may get that big. The others seem to stay small but multiply well. I have some in a hanging basket and when they grow out of the pot, they mold themselves around the lip of the pot and it looks pretty cool.
I have one that gets very long and the cylinders arch, kinda like grass. It takes up a lot of room because it gets so long and sprawling.
Well gosh you guys! Here I thought this was a new plant!! I wouldn't have posted it, if I had known it wasn't!
Butterfly..HD is a little pricy! I paid around 14.95 at WM...and I thought that was pricy...but I wanted it..lol!!
hcmc....yours are really neat too!
Marcy, yours may be a newer variety. There are all kinds of cylindrical ones. I have three or four different ones. The miniature ones were my favorite, until I saw that giant one at HD just an hour before I saw your post. So now I'm off to walmart to snag me one. LOL
LOL...butterfly! Well at least you knew there were cylindrical ones.....hahaha!!
It's new but this plant has been posted in DG for the past couple of weeks in C&S, houseplants, etc. I got mine Sep 20 after seeing someone post a picture of theirs. I went to Wal-Mart to buy cheap pots and then saw this huge sans.
Some posts are showing multiple plants in one pot which seem a bit smaller (makes sense) or one big plant per pot like the one I got. Anyway, it seems twice as fat as my old one but not as tall. The markings are different too.
Here is a close up.
Well, rats, I spent $30 and still didn't get the sans. Our Walmart didnt' have it. Instead, though, they had all their little potted succulents marked down to 50 cents and $1, so I filled a buggy! I got several different crassula, some sempervirens, haworthia, unusual aloe, variegated jade, variegated crassula, and several other unusual succulents I'd never seen before. Gonna stuff many of them in some strawberry pots. They're just too cute!
Marcy, I appreciate you posting it. Guess I should check out the houseplant forum, but once all my plants come in for winter, I have little room left for the family, let alone MORE houseplants! lol Anyway, I'm enjoying this thread. Thanks to all for posting their pic, to. Mine is in a pot, and I'm calling it the leaning tower, I'll need to reposition it to stand straighter, anyone else having my problem? I thought maybe I should add a small trellis or a couple stakes for support.....
Like BC said, there are various kinds of sans. cylindrica. The most popular one seems to be the one like fans out as it grows. But there is one that grows straight up like the regular MIL tongue. I did have a little one also, but it got more than its share of neglect and it croaked.
Hi all....guess I should check out the houseplant forum too...LOL! Oh well...I meant well! I'm like you AuntB...I save my room for my tropical..and don't have many houseplants...well..maybe a few...lol. Hubby always says this place looks like a jungle in the wintertime!
lol, By late winter, I say I can't see the trees (outside) because of the forrest (inside)! Usually by April, I'm getting anxious to see the walls, again. I do have "office" plants..... is there a forum for that? lol
HMmmmm....don't think I have seen one ????????? But maybe you could start one???? LOL!!!
