My mom's brug

Colorado Springs, CO(Zone 6a)

Hi everyone- don't post much on this forum, but I'm always gawking at how beautiful your pictures are.

I recently moved to the Rocky Mountains, where sadly brugs do not do too hot! Annyway, before I went north (to college originally), I gave a couple of my brugs to my mom and I wanted to show her success! I can't believe how much zone envy I have. She lives in Houston and her dave's name is bookworm28...hopefully she'll pop in. This one is a Dr. Suess- been in the ground about 2 maybe 3 years.

And here's the other one, which was no higher than a foot and half when we planted it, either the same year or the year after.

And just because I find it so interesting, here's the butterfly vine growing up the trunk of the brug (see right side of picture). Does anyone know the latin name for this pretty vine?

Whoops.

Those brugs are so pretty - congratulations! Love the vine, too. I've never seen one like that before, so have no clue what the name is, but now I want one. LOL

Susanne, that is an amazing brug your Mom has there. It must be overwhelming when in full bloom.

Your vine is so cool. I have never seen that one, I just love those seed pods. Very cool.

Thanks everyone, on behalf of my mom! I haven't shown her this thread yet though, she would be so proud! I'm pretty sure yall are right- mascagnia. It's the coolest little vine- the flowers are almost forgetable and then those pods are just beautiful at all the stages. Hopefully I can get some seeds and share soon. Last time I was home the brug was about half as full in bloom and we could smell it any time we walked outside, front or back...oh I miss those growing conditions.

Hi all! I'm Susanne's mom and owner of the beautiful Dr. Seusses that she gave to me as little starts about 3 years ago. I miss her so much now that she's in the mountains, but the pretty yellow blooms have made me smile so many times and think happy thoughts about her. I think the cooler nights sent it into this massive bloom, but now it's back up to the upper 80's and low 90's, so the blooms kind of wilted a bit the day after I took these pics.

Kell - that's the vine! Thanks - I didn't know its real name. It's growing all over the brug so it makes an awesome sight. I read about saving the seeds, and I'll do what it says on the plant files. I'll be happy to share when they dry out.

I'm going to the Central Texas Roundup in November and have 3 baby Dr. Seuss ready to trade as long as whatever is munching on them doesn't overwhelm it until then. I don't do bug sprays and I can't see what's eating at them.

Sending really warm thoughts to all from hothouse Houston! Thanks for posting, Susanne :)

Susanne and Mom, I have been kind of 'out of the loop' lately and just saw this thread. Your brug is so impressive. I bet you hear sounds of car brakes when people drive by. I know what you mean about wanting better weather, I am in about the same climate as you Susanne, and am slowly getting my plants into warmer places. Wouldn't it be nice to have the best of both worlds, I guess pictures will have to do.

Marie
