hoop question

Chesapeake, VA(Zone 7b)

Those hoops that I see on the pots of some of the hoyas; Do you just keep wrapping the vine up and around and up and around again as it grows? Do you have to have these? What happens if you dont use them? Thanks, Dawn

Most of mine hang down but I do wrap Kerri around a hoop. I like the look better for Kerri.

Dawn,
I use hoops, mainly because the interior of my house is stucco. I am afraid that eventually the weight of most of my hoyas will pull the hook out of the ceiling, (even with an anchor) and I will have a huge mess, as well as a fairly major construction project. Not to mention that I am sure DH would be pissed enough to cut me entirely off from future hoya purchases!! HA!

My lighter hoyas, like vitellinoides I have hanging, as well as heavier ones that I know are in a stud. I think that you can grow your hoyas however you prefer, I have seen bushy hoyas that one would think need to hang, on a hoop, and heavy dangly vines, that would climb, hanging and growing down. I think that it is just a matter of personal preference, and practicality.
