My chicken feed is expensive, and my chickens don't seem to be able to eat without scattering it everywhere. Some, of course, they get up off the floor, but a lot does seem to get wasted. Does anyone use a feeder that really minimizes feed waste? I'd be so grateful for any ideas... (One person told me to slightly wet the feed daily to make it easier to pick up, but I can't do that every day, and I think it's a mistake to get the feed wet and risk molding/spoiling.)
Wasting feed
Are you using crumbles? I found pellets are the way to go, less waste. And when they do scratch it on the ground it's easy for them to pick up.
I also Raise the feeder so it is chest high. But if you have different size birds that doesn't work to well. Pellets are good and my silkies eat them so do not let your birds tell you it is to big lol.
Not crumbles: My feed is basically grains and legumes, with other stuff added. Maybe that's the problem. The feeder is chest high, for the birds. I'm thinking about moving it to a covered spot outside so they can deal with it on the dirt. Thanks!
