What is the craziest thing you've ever seen a chicken do?

I'm new at having chickens so I haven't experienced anything to write about yet, but I'm sure the experienced "chicken masters" have some great stories!

Aren't chickens great Glenda!!! The other night, I went out to tuck the ladies in. It was pitch black but they all came out to the yard, to see what I had brought them. All of a sudden, Brownie, a puff-headed Polish, flew up over my head, and landed on the TOP of the trampoline net. She just sat there wobbling all over the place, bound-and-determined to hand on for dear life. Scared the daylights outa me. I'm fairly new with chickens myself, and I had no idea they could fly up so high. It's probably about 10-12' in the air. I had to get a rake to be able to reach her to get her back into the coop for the night. Sadly, I ended up having to clip her flight feathers shortly after. I bet backyard has some great stories for us. Lets hear em.

One of my favorite things to watch is the mass Old Country Buffet when I
put out left over spaghetti. I try to wash all the garlicky red sauce off
because I don't want garlic/onion eggs. (ewwww)

One gal will finally grab a HUGE beakful of spaghetti strands and then
go running off and there chasing her will be like 5 others, all pell mell
running to beat the band. Hysterical.

Hope everyone else has a funny story. I love em.

I love you Glenda! I love your posts! That is EXACTLY why I love chickens, because they are so rediculous!

I have one chicken named Pandora, who is a barred rock. She will jump on my shoulder, like a parrot on a pirate and preen my hair. I just have to watch out for her preening my eyes :)

I love how they will all relax then suddenly they have URGENT BUSINESS across the yard and they run run run over. Or how anything in someone else's mouth must be extra delicious, so they will ignore the treats on the ground to squabble over the one in their neighbor's mouth!

I love an indignant chicken, when she ruffles all of her feathers waaay out and shakes, the picture of offended!

Or a dustbathing chicken, who is covered in dirt and has her legs stretched waaay out in the sun.

CHicks are great, too when they are peeping then all of a sudden BOOM they are asleep with thier beaks in the food dish.

My parents have a hen who LOVES my father and follows him around cooing and squawking, much to his embarrassment. That is PRICELESS.

I also love how they put themselves to bed. It is so logical. It is night time, so we sleep!

I also love to see them think, when you can tell they are making judgements about height or distance before they jump or fly somewhere. You can see that little peabrain working!

oh chickens. they are so fun!

Why thank you, Backyard Hen! I have to tell you, my chickens have really surprised me. They are much funnier and entertaining that I ever thought they would be. Actually, I had thought that chickens would just be boring, dumb animals that wander around the yard, eating bugs. Period. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they each have their own personality, and that they interact with my family and I more than I ever imagined, and I never anticipated becoming (their) "Mother Hen". When I squat down most of them gather around me and some even get under me!! Now tell me, how cute is that!!?? They all are a hoot, but I think my two favorites (as far as personalities goes) are my 2 RI Reds. I tell everyone that they are the two "nosey sisters" who always have to check out where you're going and what you're doing. If they were human, and lived back in the early 1900's, they would have been telephone operators - eavesdropping on everyone's conversations and then gossiping. They are also the ones who will let me pet them any time I want. ...I just love all my chickens! I only have 8 of them now, but how many is too many? Is it possible to have too many? Is there a breed of chicken that is more entertaining or "outgoing" than others? …I'm curious.

I had a yard rooster, last year that would breed my cat. He has since disapeared, maybe the cat just had enough. John

Yikes! Couldn't hardly blame the cat, if he's guilty... Some guys just won't take NO for an answer. Ha! ~:>

Crestedchik,

We had a chicken flip over a coal scuttle (kind of a metal bucket). She got herself trapped under it somehow. As best as we could tell she had spent three days under there before anyone found her. During the meantime she had laid an egg, broken it, and then had eaten it. I guess thats what kept the poor thing alive. My mom finally noticed the bucket moving and turned it back over.....out shot one disgusted bird!
