Begonia Rex

New York, NY

Hi Everyone. I'm new to this site as well as growing Begonias. My neighbor gave me a cutting 7 months ago. She told me it was a Begonia Rex. After much research I realize there a many Begonia Rex. Does anyone recognize this particular plant? It is doing very well. The leaves are as large as 8" in diameter. There are red hairs on the light green stems.

I appreciate any help. I look forward to learning a great deal.

Hmmm, looks more like a rhizomous than a rex, but I am new too so what do I know?!

Welcome and enjoy all the past posts, the info on the sticky thread, so much to learn! So much to feed an addiction!

Sure is pretty. I'm sure someone with more knowledge will happen along :-)

Everyone seems so nice and excited about this forum. I am pleased to have found it. My apartment is a studio in Manhattan with a 18' wide window with Southern Exposure. There is plenty of light, not so much space. Already I'm looking to buy my next begonia. This could turn into a problem; what a nice problem.

Hope someone can identify my little baby. I think Sue is right about it looking more like a rhizomous than a rex. I'm going to start my search again.

Talk to you all soon.

Try this: (it's probably some kind of 'Ricinifolia' variety)

Hi Gang,

I think I've fallen in love with my 3rd begonia. ( I know, I know. . . I'm such a novice. Still, I fear it is an addiction I will have to learn to control.) Thanks to Butch I know the name of my first begonia- Ricinifolia. I just bought a withlacoohee, also known as a bridal veil. It arrived looking a little worse for the wear. I watered it and set it near the window and it perked up nicely. (I think I'm going to fall for it as well.) Then this afternoon I was on the American Begonia Society's website and saw a picture of "Joe Hayden". Wow! I love it. I must have it. (And so it begins. )

The reason for the email. . . Where might I purchase this rare beauty? If anyone knows, please email me with that information.

Thanks in advance.

You can purchase 'Joe Hayden' at Glasshouseworks.com. I bought mine from there this past spring. I'm not sure if they would ship it now or wait until Spring.

Good Luck and welcome to your addiction! Hey, if you get a minute, google these varieties: 1.) 'Marmaduke' 2.) Fire Flush 3.) Escargot. These are just a few of my favorites.

'Joe Hayden' is an easy grower but it can get big. I got mine at PHOE (Palm Hammock Orchid Estates). GHW is not bad but they get a lot of things wrong (either they aren't experts or they think they can pass off the wrong plant) and this year it took MONTHS to ship anything.

Hi Gang,

The heat has just turned on in my apartment building. Though I don't actually turn the unit on in my apartment a certain amount of heat escapes. I notice that my begonia looked a bit droopy. I checked the soil and it had dried out. So I watered it, misted it and moved it away from the radiator. Tomorrow I will start using a humidifier. I just checked and I must say it has responded well to the little bit of TLC.

As soon as I finish the triage I sat down to write you all. Let me know if my treatment sounds correct.

Thank you in advance for your help.
