Savory 'Pink Sensation'
ecrane,
I just saw this plant for sale on one of my monthly email newsletters from a nursery close by. Are you growing this plant and can you tell me if you like it? Are the blooms showy or real small. I'm really thinking this might be nice in my garden.
Thanks, Donna
It's a nice plant but I wouldn't say it's that showy--it's a small plant and pretty low to the ground (although maybe it will get bigger--I can't remember how large it's supposed to get) and the flowers aren't all that big, maybe a half an inch (it's not blooming now and I'm terrible at guessing measurements from memory!) I think it's very pretty, the best use for it would probably be to buy a bunch of them and mass them in the front of a border or something, if it's just one or two plants they might get lost among everything else
Thank you so much for the info. I am interested in finding a nice perennial that is PINK. I have so much purple and blues with some yellow thrown in. I will take a look at it at the nursery and maybe do what you suggested and buy more than one.
Donna
If you're trying to add a noticeable splash of pink to your garden, I think there are some other plants that might be better, this one is low enough and a bit of a subdued pink color, so I don't know if it'll really stand out. There are a couple pink perennials that I have which I think are more showy than this one (some are also a little taller, so it depends on where in the garden you're putting things). Oxalis hirta is one of my favorites (it's a sun-loving Oxalis and I've had better luck with it so far than the shade-loving ones which usually die on me within a month or two). It would be about the same height but in my opinion is much more showy. Somewhat taller is Alstroemeria 'Theresa', also one of my fav's (there are a lot of other pink Alstroemeria's too if you can't find that one), and then if you want something a little to a lot taller there are a number of pink Salvia's (S. buchananii, S. iodantha, S. chiapensis, S. dorisiana, S. involucrata, and several cultivars of S. greggii and S. microphylla, two of my fav's are 'Dancing Doll' which has bicolor pink/purple flowers, and 'La Trinidad Pink' which is a beautiful clear pink.) I think most of these have pics in Plant Files if you want to check them out.
I will have to check out the Oxalis hirta in the PF, don't think I have seen that one. I do have a lot of Salvia's, but mostly purple, blues, yellow and red....no pinks so far. I did have a S. buchananii for over a year, but alas if finally died on me. I do love alstroemeria's and I have one so far. I traded for some other last summer, but they didn't make it. I think it was to hot at that time.
Thanks for taking the time to give me some great ideas. You are a very helpful person and have given a lot of good advice to many of us DGers....thank you. :-)
Donna
I just looked up the Oxalis hirta and S. 'La Trinidad Pink' in the PF. I love the Oxalis...going to have to get me some of that for sure. Might even think about the Salvia also.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
I'm not sure how widely available the Oxalis is--I saw it blooming at the UC Berkeley Botanical Garden in early fall and fell in love with it, then lucked out and spotted it at Annie's Annuals a few weeks later so you might check their website and see if they still have it.
