Gifts from another hoya lover!

Ottawa, ON

A big thanks for the kindness shown to me by epiaddict (joanne)!!

She gifted me with 10 hoya cuttings! I can't believe it. I am soooo excited. I hope that I can provide them with lots of what they need so they can reward me with the wonderful flowers I just love! A friend gave me a small hoya about 4 years ago and I just love this plant and now I have a whole collection!

Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou again Joanne. :) :) That was so nice of you.

I've attached a picture of my new hoyas. They are as follows:

H. Susseula
H. carnosa 'Tricolour' Krimson Queen
H. pubicalyx 'Reva'
H. polyneura aka: Fishtail Hoya
H. autralis
H. pubicalyx 'Royal Hawaiin Purple' or 'CV. chimera'
H. curtsii
H. Kerrii - variegated
H. Kentiana
H. australis ssp. australis

Kat

Isn't this just the best bunch of people you'd ever want to meet. I was like you and Ann W. sent me an entire collection that I have potted up. I wish I had some knowledge to go with it but I'm buying the book when it comes out.

Wow, Joanne and Annie, that is so generous!! It is awesome to see that there are still "golden rule" people in the world!! I know that everyone has to start their collection somewhere, and it is easy to remember kindnesses when you get a gift like that. I received cuttings from Annie too, and Mel shared her plants, before I purchased from her during her greenhouse cleaning, and I truely appreciate my cuttings too - all are doing great! I can't wait until mine are large enough to pass on and share with others who are just starting out.
You do my heart good!

You are SO welcome! I am just glad that they made it across the border and survived! Now that you have been bitten by the hoya bug, you will be able to send cuttings to a new forum member in a few years or the way we all seem to aquire plants here, only a few months! Enjoy them and God bless you. -joanne

Hi Kat

That is so wonderful! Your are right this is the best family of hoya people around. So giving and sharing of their knowledge, time and cuttings too. Last month I received a big bunch of cuttings for free from Anne.I also received lovely cuttings and plant hanger from nightowl and Carol in the swap. They are all rooting just fine. I just love these guys to bits....
I too can't wait for them to grow so that I can share more as well. I know how big my smile was when I received them and can't wait to pass it on.

Yup, everyone on this forum ROCKS!!

Ottawa, ON

I'd have to agree....everyone on this forum is so amazing and helpful. I hope some day I can contribute helpful posts instead of always just hungrily reading all the posts and learning.

I just hope I am successful in rooting these babies. I have put the ends in that liquid that is supposed to stimulate root growth and put them in water (except for the ones that already had roots). Do you think this will be ok or should I switch to some other method?

Thanks,
Kat

This may be the blind leading the blind but this is how I do it and it has worked great for me. I have read that lots of folks use water too so your way is probably just fine too. I pot them up and then put a ziplock bag over top and zip it up close to the side of the pot. Whoops forgot a step. I first take a big bowl with room temp water and a few drops of superthrive. I soak them for a couple hours and then pot them up.
Over the next few days I really monitor how much steam builds up in the bag. I keep opening it until it doesnt buildup on the plastic inside. Sometimes that is all the way open. Open it each day to let fresh air in. By about the 6 to 8 weeks I will see new growth starting and then I know it is rooting. I start opening the bag to it's widest and eventually in the next couple of days the bag comes off completely.

Now I hope the pro's chime in and tell you what works best for them:)

yes this is the best place....i too got free cuttings from annie and every one of them are rooting....jeri11 mentioned a book....book?...what book?...i want to know about the book?....and i hear there is a magazine as well...want to know more about that too

Wow what a haul. And they got across the border :) Joanne your such a generous person.

Hummingbird Ann Wayman is writting a book on Hoya's, it should be out soon. There is also the Fraterna Magazine that comes out every quarter, with information and photo's on hoya's. You can join the International Hoya Association, or there are back issues of the Fraterna available. To join I think you need to contact SandyC and she will get you hooked up. HTH

Hello all of you
This is making me so envious..... , i would like so much to make a trade of cuttings , i love hoyas a lot , i already have a few , lacunosa , kentiane , bella , bella gold . krinkle 8 , variegated carnosa . and hindu rope . i worry about shipping cuttings over the border but i see that it made it for Khyro( lucky you .) I have many other plants that i could root cuttings from for a trade of hoyas .
If someone is interested .I would be so happy to have other hoyas cuttings that i do not have , Here in Canada it is very limited the varieties of hoyas that we can get .I'm always looking for new ones . I hope Santa answers my dream!
Take care all of you

Kat, great collection of cuttings! This is wonderful and generous group. That's why I need to stay away because I'm always drooling and wanting....lol. I didn't see your var. Kerri. You probably was told to hide it from me since that is one on my wish list.

Well I'm happy to report that all of epiaddict's gifts are doing well except the H. Kerrii - variegated that lost all it's leaves early on and didn't make it. :( I sure liked that one and wished I hadn't lost it.

However, everyone else is doing great and really growing. But now that some of them are getting so long I don't know if they are supposed to trail or be twined in some sort of trellis. I have my first hoya on a small trellis but can't find any small trellis' for indoor plants anywhere. Where does everyone get these?

Thanks,
Kat

look in hardware stores for anything that can be bent...twisted...etc. Or on line in some of the garden supply places. A few REALLY like to hang, like lacunosa, obscura, sipitanguensis, heuschkeliana... these come to mind directly. Funny about lacunosa...she and obscura love to climb up trees but in pots seem happier hanging down....

Kat, I have more of the kerrii. When the weather warms up remind me and I will send you some more. I'm glad the others are doing so well! -joanne

Fuquay-Varina, NC(Zone 7a)

I'm afraid to take cuttings from anyone. I haven't been able to root any cuttings off my own plants, try as I might. blue-eyes even sent me some obscura seeds, but they never sprouted.

::sigh::

at least I haven't killed any already established plants. the only exception to that would be an obovata I found at Lowes, but it died so fast, I'm pretty sure it had nothing to do with me.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Gaia....send me a dmail and tell me how you tried to root your cuttings...perhaps I can help you. It really makes sense once you get the hang of it....after all, I can do it and I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer!!!!

Ottawa, ON

You're so kind joanne! I'd love to try my hand at another kerrii when the weather warms up. I'll be sure to ask you at that time. :)

In the meantime, all the others are doing well (hopefully I don't jinx them).

Cheers,
Kat

thanks, miss aloha!!

I'll try the whole rooting thing again once it warms up enough for me to evict most of these other plants outside. I figure it will be best to try it during the growing season.

I have no problems rooting most any other plant. I guess the hoyas just know how much I love them. maybe I should start giving them the cold shoulder...

gaiadisciple - you found an OBOVATA at Lowes? When was this? Do you know where it came from - who the grower was? I already have an obovata, but I am just surprised that you found one there. Up until last spring there were some Home Depots that carried a few different hoyas ( nummularioides was one, labeled Hoya Rose ) from a now defunct grower in Florida, but since then I only see Exotic Angel plants there.

Fuquay-Varina, NC(Zone 7a)

I actually think it may have been a brevialata instead

Medford, NJ

oh...that makes more sense. Another EA plant bites the dust. I don't know of anyone who hasn't been thru the death of at least one.

Fuquay-Varina, NC(Zone 7a)

the only saving grace is that I keep the receipt (for all Lowe's plant purchases), and you can bet your bottom dollar that I will take back dead plants!

Medford, NJ

I think you have a year to take them back...I have lost 2 or 3 and never did, and that is not good - EVERYONE should return dead plants, maybe then they would change their care.

I know it has to be the wetting agent in the soil. I just bought some orchid soil that has a wetting agent in it ( I did not read the label before buying ) I mixed in with it 2 whole bags of Schultz's orchid bark, so I figured it would be ok - Well, it isn't ok!
Now what I have is all of the plants I used it to repot are staying wet too long, the soil is very dense, and I have been overtaken by fungus gnats. I would love to repot, but I am afraid of shocking the plants even more. I think I am going to have to, though....
