Would someone please tell me the difference between African Violets, what they call Streps and what they call Gesneriad??
I have jumped around in the threads and can't find this info. It is probably right before my eyes and I am missing it!! :(
I have some AV that I bought several months ago and they are doing beautifully. I am new at growing them. Someone please enlighten me as to the other two terms!!!
Showing My Ignorance.....
Hi!
Gesneriad is the name of the plant family.
Within the family, there are lots of genera (singular=genus). Streptocarpus is a genus. Saintpaulia (the technical name for African Violet) is a genus.
Within each genus are many species. For example, Saintpaulia ionantha is the name a specie that is the parent (or ancestor) of many of the hybrids we see today.
You can read lots more at http://www.gesneriads.ca/genus.htm

Thanks Keyring for the information. I appreciate it. I will look in the hyperlink you provided and see if I can find out the differences/characteristics of the two genus. I would have no idea what I have as I bought them at Lowe's and they were not named. Thanks again!
Great info Keyring ! I love the web sight too.
