Extra Cannas for Trade

Dublin, TX(Zone 8a)

Good Monday morning everyone! I have worked all weekend long digging, separating and moving my cannas around appropriately. I have four gorgeous rhizomes left over that desperately need a home! All were dug late yesterday (Sunday) afternoon, rinsed and are ready to be shipped today. If you are interested you can d-mail me or email me at bkstarnes@earthlink.net. I would love to trade canna for canna, as I am working on adding to my canna collection.
I have never known the name of this variety of canna, the first one was given to me by my grandmother and over the years I have multiplied them by the hundreds! They have very pretty bright green foliage, grow to be 6-8 feet tall and have clusters of dainty peach blooms that will produce blooms all summer long and then leave you with hundreds of canna seed to reproduce for next year!

Thanks, they are pretty but there's sooooooooooo many of them!
Texasgardenmom, if you want to trade a couple with me, I'd be interested. I hope you don't mind me highjacking your thread.

Dublin, TX(Zone 8a)

Weegy, sounds great to me. Do you want all four of them or just a couple of them? I really need to find these babies a home today! Just let me know - - - and no, I don't mind you hijacking my thread, you thread thief! LOL
Belinda :-)

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

LOL! I'll take 2 of yours and how many do you want of mine? I'm in the addy exchange.

Dublin, TX(Zone 8a)

Super, two coming your way first thing in the morning. I too am in the addy exchange and two of yours works great for me! Thanks for the offer!
Belinda :-)

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Ok, you got it! They'll probably cross in the mail!

Dublin, TX(Zone 8a)

How tall do yours get? I bet they love your warm, tropical weather, don't they? All we have here is DESERT type of weather...........hot, dry and miserable!
Belinda :-)

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

yes, belinda, but it is GREEN in (where else but) ...........................EL PASO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OUR 20,000 ACRE LAKE IS DOWN TO 10 BUT THERE IS VEGETATION IN EL PASO!!! LOL. BARB

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

They get pretty tall, I'd say over 5 ft cuz they're taller than me and I'm 5' 4". We don't really have tropcial weather here, but they get a tropical treatment with overhead misting and they absolutely love it. Our weather if probably very similar to yours but right now we're having some humidity.
Now, do I cut them down to the bulb? They're still green and most are blooming. Don't know too much about cannas can you tell!!!??

Dublin, TX(Zone 8a)

Barb ~ isn't that the most ridiculous thing ever???????????? ElPaso, green???? Who would have ever thought of such! I have a friend who lives just outside of ElPaso and she said that her cactus' and succulents started growing fungus and she had to move them in! She has gardened for 30 years and has never seen this before............what next, huh?

weegy ~ Thanks for the height info on your cannas. Mine too get the 'ole fake tropical treatment everyday and yes, they do love it. Once you get your cannas dug up, wash them off really well until all soil is gone and then cut the "stalk" down to 3"-4" to ship. It is terrible to have to cut off feet of gorgeous growth, but if you don't the cannas won't survive the trip and transplant. By cutting them back it allows new growth or pups to emerge once they are in their new garden home. Any other questions I can help with?

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Thanks Belinda, that was very helpful and I will get them up and washed...do they have to be dried like iris rhizomes???

Dublin, TX(Zone 8a)

I like to dry mine overnight outside in a shady area, then ship. It seems to prevent root rot this way. Glad that I could help.

Ok, thanks!

GM Janet ~
You are more than welcome to the other two canna rhizomes and I would love to try one of each of your Rosemond Coles and Wyoming. I am working on an entire garden full of various cannas. Thanks for the great trade. I will get your cannas packaged up and in the mail to you, asap.
Thanks,
Belinda :-)

I'm pondering a shipping issue. It's been pretty cool here but was in the 80s yesterday and is supposed to be again today. Normally I would wrap canna roots in a damp paper towel and put them in a plastic bag. With the up and down of the temps I am not sure if I should send them damp or dry. These are going south and right back into the ground. Hoping for three days or less in a box. Wet or dry? Opinions?? Thanks! I have already cleaned them and they are doing the drip dry. Headed out to cut them back. :)

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Oh and a box is going Northwest to zone 8. Any difference?

Dublin, TX(Zone 8a)

Badseed ~ with the changes in temps/humidity, I would definitely send the canna rhizomes dry - gently wrap a paper towel around the roots (for protection) and package well. So many times by the time the cannas arrive at their new home, what was once nice, moist roots are now a rotted, mushy mess. Make sure to send your package priority mail, which will cut down on the time they have to sit in a hot post office or vehicle. If your cannas were going North from your area, you could get away with mailing them moist and wrapped in a plastic baggie, especially this time of the year. Hope this helps you ~

Happy Tuesday!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Thank you Belinda. I mail plants all the time and always use priority but this goofy weather sometimes sparks worries in me. LOL I'd have no problems whipping daylilies and iris dry into a box, rolled in newspaper but just couldn't decide right now with the canna since they will be going straight back to active growth. Wish I lived in zone 8!! ;)

Dublin, TX(Zone 8a)

You are most welcome - - - so glad that I could help. I am sure that you can grow things in zone 6 that I can't dream of growing here in my desert like conditions for months on end! UGH, the heat is pitiful. Still now it soars up to 97-99 each day and this is October! Needless to say, if we didn't have a well for water................I wouldn't be watering my gardens twice daily like I am able to now! My DH would die if we had to pay for all those gallons of water! =) Best of luck shipping your cannas, they will do just fine.
Belinda :-)

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

What I "can" grow is not the problem. It's what I "think" I can grow that causes all the problems. LOL Unfortuately I am a tropical chick in a winter climate. LOL My yard is filled with things better suited to your climate. Like an idiot, I keep planting them then dragging them in and out in 15 and 25 gallon containers. ;) You should hear the wagon on my mower groan when I fill it with brugs, elephant ears, banana, canna and the like. HA! At least this year I have the riding mower. I usually have to haul them around in a wagon, dolly or worse case scenario-carry or drag them.

Dublin, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh my goodness! Your poor back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is hard not to love those tropical plants! I too am a "tropiholic" as my DH would say. I love anything that resembles that tropic look. The bad part is that it is SO dry here, everything has to be misted or sprayed twice a day to keep from burning in my HOT sun! I do feel your pain about dragging them in.................I fortunately only have to drag a few in when the time comes! Luckily, I only have about 45 days of really cool weather (certainly not cold) and they would probably be fine left out, but I don't want to take the risk after ALL of the babying these plants get ! lololololol Thanks for sharing with me!
Belinda :-)

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Belinda, cannas are all washed and drying, should be able to ship later as it is pretty warm here.
Thanks for the trade.

Dublin, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks weegy - - - I shipped yours today, you should have them within 2-3 days! Can't wait to add them to my canna garden. Thanks for a great trade.
Belinda :-)

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

I will be getting yours out by hopefully on Thursday. I had an eye doctor appointment today, and cannot get used to my new glasses! But that's another story..lol Tomorrow I am going on a short trip to pick up some iris...so I hope I can work in the yard tomorrow evening some, if not I will ship no later than Friday. Thanks so much! Can't wait to add them to my garden!
JanetS

Dublin, TX(Zone 8a)

Sounds great, Janet! I sent you a reply d-mail as well! Thanks again for a great trade and I hope you enjoy these cannas as much as I do! Enjoy your iris trip, that sounds like a delight!

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Is it ok for someone who lives in zone 7b/8a to plant cannas now or should they wait?

Dublin, TX(Zone 8a)

They can do either. If they want to get a jump start on their cannas, they should plant now and then cover and mulch well after the first frost for protection. If they had rather wait, they should dry the cannas out well, then store in a dark, cool place until Spring. Hope this helps you!
Belinda :-)

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Thanks Belinda, that will help.

Dublin, TX(Zone 8a)

You are most welcome, just glad to help when I can!
