My Mother has this plant that has beautiful blue blooms. The plant is the size of a med. shrub. It has an arching appearance and is beautiful.
My question is will it survive in our zone 8b through the winter?

Questions about Duranta Erecta Plant
dont think it will but it will reseed
Mine never has which is a shame because by the end of summer, it puts on quite a show. Maybe worth digging up and providing protection or taking cuttings? Every year, I replace mine.
I'm a little warmer than you, but mine has made it for three years now, with no die back. In fact it's bloomed non stop and never even lost it's leaves. It's about 10 to 12 feel tall, and that's in spite of me whacking it back pretty severely. It's in a fence corner of the yard, gets full sun until about 2:00 p.m., then the neighbors trees shade it. So far, it hasn't had any problems with bugs, diseases, etc. I love the "waterfall" effect, but it gets a LOT larger than the label indicated.
Thank you all for your input. My Mother has decided to take a chance on the shrub and leave it in the ground but she and I both are going to root several cuttings. She already has one cutting that has rooted and is blooming, although it is very small. We will mulch the shrub well for winter and hope for the best. It is located on the southeast side of the house.
Jeanne you are right. The shrub was just put in this spring. We realize it can get huge but where it's located it won't matter. It has bloomed non stop all summer. I'm not sure about the name but I think it is like yours Jeanne, 'Sweet Memories'. It is beautiful.
It's encouraging to know that your shrub has done so well there in Willis. Maybe my Mothers will too.

I want one of those! Those are just beautiful.
Dancey, they also come in a solid white! Guess who goes them. lol
Have you seen the golden seeds on them yet? If not, you are in for a treat.
Wonderful plant!!!
Jeanne your plants and rose are beautiful. Midway is about 11 miles east of Madisonville on hwy 21. Midway is a tiny town between Madisonville and Crockett. We live on a county road out in the country.

Lin..thanks..hmmm..I think I know where Crockett is..I live just North of Conroe Texas on Lake Conroe in Willis Texas...so you are east of me???..Kinda like the shortcut I take going through Cuttinshoot to get to Beaumont??..
I have had one on the north side of my house that has come back for 3 years now. I am in z8 but out in the country with no shelter from the north winds. The first year I mulched it thickly but have not done so since. It is blooming now.

Yes Jeanne I'm northeast of where you live. I've been to Willis. My grandsons played Willis in football many times. ;) They went to high school in Centerville Tx.
Yes Smockette I knew they come in white also. Would love to have one of those too since I love white in the gardens. Hmmmm I'll have to look at the plant list you gave me. ;)
Haven't seen the golden seeds yet. I'll be waiting to see those.

What am I doing wrong?! My duranta stopped blooming soon after bringing it home this spring. It has grown quite a bit, but no blooms. It's in what I thought would be a prime spot in a nice bed on the east side of the house.
Siggy ...they thrive on neglect and full sun...I do absolutely nothing to mine except prune the heck outta it because it gets so huge and wants to take over my gardens...Jeanne
Well perhaps I have been over fertilizing.
Would mulching it really well not help?
It's sooo beautiful.
I would think that mulching in your zone 7B would help and having it planted in a micro-climate area of your garden might ensure success such as up against the house..protected from the cold winds...I would definitely mulch Mahnot...Jeanne
