Is this a gesneriad? If so, what is it?

Hometown, IL(Zone 5a)

I got this in a trade labled "purple fuzzy leaf." Is this a gesneriad?
It's just beginning to grow, and I'd like to make sure it has the conditions it needs to succeed.

Thanks,

Marsha.

Sorry I'm not sure either

It looks like a type of Wandering Jew to me.

I agree with Ccino42. I was thinking it was some type of wandering jew myself.

Are the leaves actually fuzzy? Because to my recollection (we're out of town at the moment) my wandering jew plants have fairly smooth leaves. If they are hairy-fuzzy like an african violet's leaves, then I don't think it's a wandering jew. This may be a puzzle to take to the ID forum....

I have this same plant. It is called a Siderasis fuscata, sometimes referred to as Bear Ears. It is one of the spiderworts that does not have trailing stems. Here is what it says in my plant book:

Quoting:
Brown spiderwort, or bear ears (Siderasis fuscata), is one of the rare spiderworts that doesn't trail but forms clustering rosettes of broad, oblong, olive green leaves with a silvery central band and a purple reverse. The whole plant is covered with copper brown hairs. It bears large, lavender-blue flowers in clusters from the center of the plant. Because it produces no visible stems, it can't be multiplied from cuttings, only by division.

I know that this plant loves a lot of humidity but it does not like to be misted. So if you are going to be misting to bring the humidity level up, make sure you mist around it but not directly on it. I hope this helps.

Jesse,

Thanks for the ID! Sorry I posted to the wrong forum-I didn't have a clue what it was. I've got it in the same window as my AVs, on a pebble tray. There's new growth; so far, so good.

Violet,

I second that sentiment! :D

And everyone else,

Thanks as well! I love DG; the people are great here!

Marsha.
