SPIDERS!

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Ack! the last few mornings when I walk into my greenhouse I have run into spider webs! I bet whomever spun it didn't figure on catching something that big!

I have had spiders in my greenhouse ever since I put it up. They have always stayed under the potting bench and never been a bother to me so I let them stay. This one is a new one and I can't seem to find out who is doing this though. I think it's a bunch of them because I'm constantly having to remove webs from plants.

Anyone else have resident spiders? Anyone know if they have a specific time they build their webs? I'd like to catch her in the act so I can remove her to a more hospitable place!

The only spiders that I have are black widows, and its been that way for over 10 yrs. They love it in there! They hide under the lower wooden shelves and in the electrical boxes-finally killed on of those that had been in a box for years and I happen to have been there at the right time and saw her and now she's dead! lol I use to have an employee that loved a good black widow hunt, everyyear when we opened up a grhouse she was right there, flipping over the boards. They are very easy to kill-they just sit there until you pick up a rock and kill it. However, you get one shot at it because they will move if you miss-but thats rare....
Their webs are very easy to distinquish-very strong and extremely unorganized. They are never in the web during the day. I was bitten once-but outside-it was on a propane tank, and it was like a beesting-it itched for a few days. The only people that would have a problem are those that are so allergic to bee stings that they have to carry the medicine if bitten. They would get a more severe reaction.

The main web at the door is always a beautifully spun orb web. The others around the plants might be but it's hard to tell. I think I brought her in the greenhouse with a pot I grabbed from my shed. She definitely got to go!

X ~ Stroll out after dark. If you have lights on in the GH, they make the web where bugs will be attracted to light. You will see the spider well in the dark. If the GH lights are off, carry a flashlight. Not to worry though, they WILL BE BAAACK. : ))
