Hand pollinated a Jatropha Multi.

Has anyone ever hand pollinated the flowers on one of these?

tropicman, I just started several of these from seed. I don't even remember why-except that I liked the foliage. Yours looks big-is it in a container? I am assuming that it is not hardy there-I should be so lucky!! I figured when the seedlings were big enough to have to deal with, I would go back and read about the cultural requirements-but now I can ask you!

can't answer your question, but what to say your plant is beautiful.

Good luck, TM! If you find yourself with seeds or volunteers, I'm interested.

Well maybe it looks like a mary jane we might have know 50 yrs agp!!!LOL
It's in a 2 gal.pot in the ground, will need to dig it up shortly,I believe I got a small rooted cutting years ago from someone in florida,Tampa area, not sure if it's even hardy there.
If I get seeds your welcome to some!

I've never hand pollinated mine, but there's not really the necessity - it self seeds. Not a ton, but I'll get 4 to 6 seeds a summer usually. I also started a couple of cuttings this summer. Both rooted, but the key, I think, was keeping them fairly dry so they wouldn't rot. Almost like rooting a cactus or succulent (it kinda is a succulent, I guess).

lol Tropicman....it took me a minute to figure out the "mary jane". I think it was the "50" yrs ago that threw me....

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

carter it has flowered several times and nothing yet as far as seed pods!!!
Tiger,my older sister went with beatniks and they were always coming around the house and I kinda picked up the lingo!LOL My mother kept threating to wash my mouth out with soap for talking like them!!!
I remeber going into one of there clubs, tasting something like chickory coffee,I swear the spoon could stand up on its own in the cup!!!!LOLBut I prefered the rum and coke more!!!!
One friend she had looked like soupy sales, and as about as crazy too!!!LOL
Wow a walk back in time!!!

Mine doesn't set a lot of seed. I've only gotten three pods this whole summer. You can try pollinating - I've never tried, but I'd imagine it would be easy. I'd guess you just have to watch the female flower to see when she first opens to get her pollinated.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Well I have a little sucess,One seed pod is forming, and maybe another,I see a little green down there, but some black as well!

Gold Beach, OR(Zone 9a)

I grew one from seed a couple years ago. It was a fun seed to germinate, very odd. The sprout came up first then put down a "foot" that went back to the soil. It got huge in just one year. I just loved it but left it in my cool greenhouse and it died. I would love to try another if I could find the seed and keep in the house for the winter, the foliage is awesome. Mine did flower but no seeds.

I took these shots yesterday at the SF Conservatory, no tags but is this the same plant? I had never seen anything like this before. I sure would like to add them to the files here.

Hmmm, maybe not, the leaves on this one don't look as jagged, unless it's another variety.

Thanks Bill,
Can you tell me how tall these grow in the ground,in south Florida?
My seed pods turned black before they even got any size to them, parently the pollination didn't take good enough..

West Palm Beach, FL(Zone 10b)

I've seen them as tall as 7 to 8 ft high. I got several pups that sprung up from around the mother plant of a friends. The one in my pic is only 6 months old and I've never tried to harvest seeds.Good luck.

Would someone be interested in trading some J. multi. seeds for some J. gossypiifolia seeds? have a bunch of these and I know I'm not going to sow them all.

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

Hi
Mine sets seeds on its own just fine. I try to pick up the pods as they fall for I end up with seedlings all around the mother plants. I get lax sometimes and end up digging up the seedlings. I have several going to around up this weekend. I have a few pods infront of me drying out. Mine was about 6 ft but took a hit from a banana tree I didn't remove right after fruiting and was getting top heavy so I chopped it in half. It will be interested to see what it does from there.

bbinnj: let me look up the J. gossypiifolia and I'll let you know about trading. If not, I can send you some for SASBE.

If you have any extra seeds, I would love to try some. I do have some nice seeds that would be good for your climate.
