This is a plant I picked up off of the clearance rack at the Missouri Botanical Garden for $3 or $4. It was labeled only "Dwarf Heliconia." Can anyone help with the name?
Heliconia ID
Looks like H. psittacorum parakeet or andromeda
Andromeda is close, but the bracts look to be too red.
The search led me to 'Choconiana.' Could that be it?
SB, I think its Parrot- one of the most common psittacorums http://www.ranger146.com/N_Leighton_Drive/pics/Heliconia_psittacorum_choconiana.jpg and after looking at the botanical name-I see that you have already gotten it! Everyone calls it Parrot though.
TL, I don't see 'Parrot' listed as a variety of H. psittacorum. I find "Parrot's Beak" listed as a common name for the species. And I see 'Choconiana' listed in the title of the pic/link.
It's 'Choconiana.'
Thanks, everybody.
What a coincidence! Thanks for posting this Stress. I took a picture this morning of my "parrot", because mine was labeled as a False Bird of Paradise when I bought it in July. I have never been able to find any info on it with that name, so I assumed it was not correct. Mine has grown so much since I bought it that it is busting out of the pot. Now that I can look it up in Plant Files I know how to propogate it. Thanks!
Is there anyone who has grown any psittacorum in the ground in so cal. Currently I have Psittacorum andromeda, lady di, and golden torch. They have all done great and have gotten several new sprouts and the andromeda and lady di have all bloomed and the golden torch is on the way. I'm curious to see if anyone has been able to overwinter them in ground and with what success. My location might get a few light frosts each year and some years none. any info would be appreciated, Thanks
