Just wanted to pop in and say "Hi". I am a big Hibiscus Fan. I have close to 100 different kinds of Hibiscus and have been working on a Hibiscus Identification File for about 12 months now with over 2000 photos and names. I am known to friends and family and most people in Hammond Louisiana as the "HIbiscus Honey" I look forward to learning more from you all, and if needed, helping where I can.

Welcome Polly, 100 hibiscus? WoW, I am a bit green with envy. You had better sit down because we will probably have about a gazillion questions for you. For starter, who is that beauty in the photo?

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

That one is absolutely gorgeous--do you know what cultivar it is?

The Hibiscus pictured is "Pride of Acadiana". It is a Cajun Hibiscus, from Dupont Nursery in Louisiana. They have a great selection in the begining of spring and summer. www.dupontnursery.com

Polly, that's the most perfect bloom of Pride of Acadiana I've ever seen. Not many people has that plant. I lost a graft I had of it.

Welcome aboard.

Hey Polly & welcome! I'm just down the road from you, and also an addict.

For sheer numbers you've got me beat though- it's good to have a roll model...lol. I've been running like crazy and haven't had much time on the boards just lately, but look forward to many many pics and info!

If Carlos says it is a perfect bloom you should be very proud. That is high praise indeed.

I thank you all for the compliments. I will gladly share some photos. I just love showing off my babies.
I started collecting Hibiscus 2 years ago when my kids moved out...you know...the empty nest thing...well my kids moved back home. Now I collect them to keep my sanity. It keeps me from killing my kids...LOL I get alot of pretty flowers and my kids get to live.
You know the old saying "I like my kids, but I love my plants"

Here is another one of my favorites......."Amazon Queen"

Polly, what are you feeding those plants? The flowers are gorgeous.

I keep telling myself, "I don't have any more room" and then I see more I want. Pitiful situation here. LOL

Hammond, LA(Zone 8b)

Hi Ardesia,
Thanks! All I feed my plants is Osmicote. I Feed once amonth. It gets a little costly.....I have about 400 plants....but I have gotten really good results. My tropicals really love it. I had a Night Blooming Cereus for ten years without a single bloom, then I started feeding it and I got 5 bloom in one night, and everything has doubled in size. I also only plant in Miracle Grow potting soil.

Wow,
You do have some beautiful hibiscus. Does it get cold up there where You live and if not how do you keep them over winter. ONe hundred hibiscus. You must have a lot of land. Fran

I really like your 'Pride of Arcadiana' . How come the coloring is different from the one on the Dupont Nursery site?

San Bernardino, CA(Zone 8b)

Wow, those are gorgeous flowers! I especially like the Pride of Acadiana; that one is particularly striking (and totally going on my "gotta have it" list). I'd love to see pictures of your yard, it must beautiful beyond compare with all those hibiscus'! Thanks so much for sharing :-)

Wow. You guys are awesome! I'm glad to joined, and hope to learn a LOT. I only have one hibiscus, and I don't know anything about it other than that it's a hibiscus! I was looking for a place to find out why it's not blooming since I bought it, but I feel kinda silly asking such a simple question of such pros!

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

What color were the flowers when you bought it?

Hammond, LA(Zone 8b)

Hi everyone,
Sorry I haven't been on lately. Working 12 - 14 hours a days and have been sick with one hell of a bad cold.
But I am sooo happy. I purchased this hibiscus 4 months ago. She looked aweful, half dead, and never bloomed, only buds that fell off. Today I got my first bloom. It looks a little ratty, caused by rain and wind, but I dont care she finally bloomed...YEAH!!!! Just wanted to share.

Love those monocromatic bands of color on the petals.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

Oops, sorry about the typo in my post! I'm glad I joined, not 'to' joined.... sheesh. My hibiscus had one yellow flower on it when I bought it. I looked today and there aren't even any BUDS. In May, I had one that had both yellow AND red flowers, and I was so thrilled with it! It bloomed every day for about two weeks, then suddenly stopped. I can't say whether it ever would have bloomed again, because my naughty dogs got to it.... >: ( The current one hasn't bloomed since that initial yellow flower. I know these are a common type of hibiscus, I didn't pay a lot and I got them from a Walmart garden center......

If those are tropicals they bloom on new growth but all you have to do is tip the branches about an inch or two and then apply hibiscus food and water WELL.
