Mustard

Olney Springs, CO(Zone 5b)

I may be in the wrong forum but,.....

Starting simple for a new gardener, what are the steps to get from...

A) What kind of mustard do I plant and how do I keep it alive.

to...

Z+) A finished jar of "put a smile on your face and clear your sinuses", homemade spicy sweet - hot mustard, on the table.

If I'm a going to garden, then lets grow what I love to eat.

I take it you want to spice up your Durani lizard skins or a plate of qagh?

Here is a site with information about making mustards at home:

I suggest soaking a spoonful of whole mustard seed from your local spice shop - the type of mustard seed you would buy to make your prepared mustard. If they sprout, you will know that these are viable and can then plant some more.

Here are a few more links with further cultivation info.

If you really want to clear your sinuses, consider growing some horseradish as well.

I planted some mustard seed I bought bulk from the grocery store. I put them in a pot with some peat and they sprouted very quickly! The mustard seeds seem to grow in little pods like legumes. I haven't done anything with them. You don't get many per plant so you may want to plant quit a few. I did taste one just "to see" and yep, it's a mustard seed...lol
