CLOSED: Packing Cuttings

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

I read the "sticky" about packaging plants and mailing them... but how would you send just a cutting?

Now it's my turn to help you...here's what I do, I wrap the roots in a wet paper towel, wrap Cling Wrap around it tight and just put it in a little box. Now that's what I do and haven't had any complaints, but someone may have a better way or at least a different way. Hope I helped you!

Donna,

Louise told you a very good way to send cuttings, but let me give you another way also.

If the cuttings are small and thin, I wrap them the same way as Louise said, but then I stick them into an empty toilet paper roll, flaten the roll slightly, put tape across the ends, so the plant can't move. Then I stick the whole thing into a 8x10 bubble envelope and mail it. This gives the plant plenty of cushioning.

SoCal,

Thanks for the advise!! I have many plants that I'd love to share cuttings from. I just had no idea on how to go about packaging them.

Thanks,

Donna socal, that's a great idea, gonna try that. What a great idea!
Donnaa2z, the puter's running great, George helped me out so much. Thanks for asking. It scared me the night before last, seemed there was a driver conflict and it repaired itself when I booted yesterday morning, it started running just as bad as before the new hard drive, but it's back to running wonderful, Thanks.
Good luck with the packing of cuttings and if I can help YOU anytime, let me know!

One more question... with cuttings... how long are they good for during shipment. I mean... if it takes a week to get to their destination... does it seem to hurt them?

They should be ok as long as they've been wrapped tight and are wet enough. If you send them priority, they'll get wherever they're going in 2 days ususally. Hope that helps.

Whatever you do, do not wrap the entire plant in wet paper, only the cut end. Otherwise, they will rot. After I wrap the cut end as above, I roll the entire thing in newspaper for added protection.

Thanks guys for the info!!! You'll be seeing me offering up some cuttings... not till spring probably though.

Oh yeah, Donna, that's what I meant...what budgie said. And yes, I also wrap the newspaper around it too. Thanks for making that clear budgie.
