Just dug up and gave 1/2 of my tropicals to the Sedgwick County Zoo. They were having a push for people to donate tropicals to be used in the Rain Forest and other areas of the zoo - so some of my Musa Basjoos and Musa Zebrinas, Alocasia Macrorrhiza and other Alocasias, Musaella, Metallic Taro and regular taro, Dracaenas, and others went to live at the zoo.
Tropicman and My2pugs - if you guys have any extras that you can't overwinter.....I would highly suggest calling Pete Logsdon at the zoo. The donation is tax deductable as well!
Donations to the zoo
Interesting.... My grandma and grandpa in Palm Beach, FL did something similar. They, at one time, had over 30 different varieties of bananas in their yard (I brought an apple banana up with me when I visited them, but my mom accidentally killed it when I left it in her care after I joined the Navy), and they gave pups from all 30 varieties to the Palm Beach Zoo, which still has the bananas growing at various places there. They were one of the first people I knew of on the East coast who had the varigated Hawaiian Aeae banana....
I'm glad that your tropicals are being put to a good use, Cap.
I've done the same type of thing. What better use for plants that to put them where more people can see and enjoy them?
I gave my orchid collection to the New Orleans Zoo when we moved away in 1989. The new place had not greenhouse, so it was good for them and good for me.
