Anemone blanda companions

Point Roberts, United States

Hi Folks,

I have a small bed of A. blanda and Fritillaria melleagris. Looks great but once they finish flowering the rest of the summer there's nothing. I need some suggestions for some companions that emerge late enough not to spoil the effect of the blanket of Anemones.

Full sun, minimum moisture, Pacific northwest, Zone 8

Suggestions I've had so far are Baptisia, Coreopsis, and Astilbe.

Ideas?

Hi, Aquilegia,

Astilbe needs moist soil and some shade. Maybe rudbeckia or geranium sanguineum would work. They tolerate sun and dryness, but I don't know how early or late they'd appear in your area. Rudbeckia generally blooms late summer; the geraniums vary.

Lavender does well in sun and dry soil, but it lasts thru the winter, so you wouldn't have a nice clean anemone blanket. Mine starts blooming in early July.

I put in a bed of just plain sweet woodruff that blooms white after the anemone and dwarf species tulips are done. Then 1 lone Hosta Wolverine and a stone garden ornament. The sweet woodruff stays green and thick till frost - then that bed is done till spring.
