Shoo Fly seeds anyone?

Lewiston, CA(Zone 7b)

These are sure fun plants, this one is "Splash of Cream". They got about 2.5 ft tall. I planted them in 3s & they filled in a 3X3 spot. They have bloomed most of the summer, I cut them back & they are blooming some more!
Next year I am going to plant them in a back border all in a row. I'm looking for different ones too.
I'll trade, whatcha got? or SASE. Bj

Did you make shoofly pie?

Got a recipe? :)

I know when I got my first seeds in a trade, the trader told me they were used to make "Shoofly pie". Now I googled and Yahoo'd, but not so! Now I must research the Shoofly Plant to find out "what's in a name"!

Here is a "classic" recipe, which uses New Orleans molasses. Be sure to use a good, thick molasses…. (As you can see, it has absolutely NOTHING to do with the Shoofly plant. (Legend has it that when the Pennsylvania Durch used to bake the pies they would leave them on the window ledges to cool down. Because of all the molasses, the pies would draw alot of flies, so...the cook would then spend her time "shooing the flies away".

Mix for crumbs: (reserving ½ cup for topping)
2/3 cup brown sugar
1 Tablespoon solid shortening
1 cup flour

Filling:
1 cup molasses (good and thick)
¾ cup boiling water
1 egg beaten
1 Teaspoon baking soda

Combine soda with boiling water, then add egg and syrup. Add crumb mixture (this will be lumpy). Pour into unbaked pie crust and cover with reserved crumbs. Bake at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 minutes, then reduce heat to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and bake for an additional 35-45 minutes (until firm). When cut into, the bottom may be "wet." This is okay, and is called a "wet bottom shoo fly pie."

Kelly, I'm in the addy exchange. I think a reg. envelope will do the trick, as these seeds are small & hard. Do please add a note as to what I'm sending you, so I don't send you milkweed seeds or something else! lol Bj

Sequee, Sounds a lot like the filling for Pecan Pie. Although I do not like Pecans, so I make mine with Cashews or Macadamia nuts. MMmmmm! I love the filling. So sweet & yummy!
Thank-x for the recipe! Bj

I put in a few of those as well. Mine got huge, about 5 feet tall, and I ended up cutting them off, they were taking over the entire bed.

Lewiston, CA(Zone 7b)

Sure Connie, Are you on the addy exchange?

BL. Mine started getting tall also so I just cut them off by about 1/2. They got thicker & put out more blooms & are still blooming now. I'm sure if you didn't get the seed before they fell to the soil, you might have an over population in spring.Or maybe not, a lot of seeds freeze & are done. I'm not taking any chances, as these are in the wrong place, so I wouldn't want more plants there. They are going in the back of the border in my english garden, a whole row of them. 2 or 3 wide. So far the deer have not touched them either!
