The first frosty night in Ottawa

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

It's starting... my coleus were the first hit last night, all wilted. I still have hope in my heart for the Brugmansia; it has seven flower buds. I will have to bring it indoors soon. Warmer weather is a prayer. I'm hoping for Indian Summer!

Those your coleus in the downtown area? How come it's 4b where you live and 5a where I live in the suburbs? Everything is still OK in my garden, but it won't be long. Good luck with your brug and let's hope on the Indian summer. Great day today, but I was busy all day. Weekend sounds yucky, but Sunday will be better than predicted. How do I know - I have Ottawa Symphony rehearsals all day. I can usually tell the nicest Sundays of the year by looking at my rehearsal schedule.

Bring the brug inside, it'll flower for a few months. Try and give it lots of light.

By now we've had touches of frost everywhere in the Ottawa area. Need to get out and bring in Cannas and Callas if it would ever stop raining.

Great concert last night, Andy. I assume you are the only bass in the Choral Society named Andrew? Not long till the Brahms Requiem collaborration.

I brought in my brugstwo weeks ago and they're losing leaves, of course. My big one had 16 buds but dropped half of them during the second week. One large (3 inches) bud opened and the flower came out about 4 inches, then this morning the flower stalk separated from the stem, before having a chance to clour up and open. Such a disappointment! There are about 4 buds left. It's been a very grey week with no sun and that might have been a factor. I'm planning to keep this one in my sunsplashed kitchen over the winter in hope that it might bloom.

I'm clearing space in my basement to place the rest of them and let them go dormant (weak light, cool temps, minimal watering). I'll hope for a regeneration in the spring and early bloom in summer.

Thanks, Ann, it was a short piece to sing but very complicated to articulate in Hungarian! We basses had to go from a sustained high D to a low A (below the staff), also sustained, at the end. Think, at 83, Decker has started to mellow. He was actually cheerful and nice to us!

I've cleaned out the gardens and containers at home and at the cottage, so I'm ready for winter. Bulbs at the ready for forcing...

Glad Decker was nice to you. An orchestra member with whom we had dessert in Le Cafe after the concert wasn't so complimentary. I did a backwards trip over a small fence in my yard on Thanksgiving Monday and landed on my tailbone and head. Still sore though the whiplash has improved. My Cannas and some Callas are still out there. If it ever stops raining, I might get them dug. For now, just back from North Bay where I became the THIRD member of the viola section at the North Bay Symphony concert last night. Betty Lorimer, also an OSO member and Choral Society member was the second member of the section. W/o us they would have had one viola.
