Will a hazelnut (filbert) grow?

Can trees be started from hazelnuts? What about the tough, woody shell, does it need to be removed?

Do not crack the nut to get a tree, plant the whole nut. If it is one of last year's nuts, germination can be so-so, depending on how the nut was stored. I'm not sure if they need some stratification (cold period), but keep the pots covered with mesh because every critter in the woods loves filberts. Since Oregon is the US leader in filbert production, I would think that trees would be available close by. Or plan a trip to the Willamette Valley and get some fresh nuts and advice on local growing.

Thanks, I'm in the Willamette Valley and I do know they grow well here. I have NEVER seen them for sale at nurseries though. I will try starting one in a pot where it will be safe.
