Alrighty...back to playing musical "homes" for the plumies as we had a couple of nights last week that were below 50. As I recall, ya'll have said they should be kept at 50 and above. Yesterday I moved them back outside and noticed a few things:
1) My Duke (the one that had the previous spots) had something funky going on with it...and I'm no help b/c I can't remember (was dealing with ALL my plants yesterday) - maybe I saw "stuff" on the leaves or insects I didn't care for...mercy, sorry...can't remember. I sprayed it's leaves (and a couple other plumies & branches) lightly with Garden Safe's Fungicide 3 (Fungicide/Insecticide/Miticide). This morning...everyone looks fine except Duke...bottom leaves are yellowing. I'll attach a photo here with them. I believe the low last night was 54. Could it have been because I sprayed it early evening and it got cool? I should've thought better and done all that earlier in the day.
2) I have an unknown white that is "stuck" to the pot...ugh!!! This was a smaller cutting I got much later on and honestly didn't think to check it as the larger ones had been fine when I checked them...so annoyed with myself. My plan was to let the plumies go dormant for the winter. Should I gently pull him up out of his pot and repot with more depth to the soil? And is there a better way then others to min. injury to the roots? Or since the weather's changing should I leave him be until spring?
You all are so patient with the questions....thanks much in advance!!!
I'm baaa-ckk w/more questions....again!
Chantell, reds are the most sensitive to cold. It is probably just dropping the lower leaves from being too cold. This also happens from being too dry so it is one or the other. It's been dipping into the low 50's here, even the high 40's, and my plants are unaffected, but most of mine are bigger, including Duke, and the bigger ones are more tolerant of colder temps. Just pull off those yellow leaves. Spraying in the evening is fine. Unless you are going to keep the white on a heat mat under lights, I would not repot the white at this time. Spring is a better time for repotting if your plants are going to go dormant soon. Soon all your leaves will yellow and fall off as they prepare for dormancy. It is important not to overwater at this time.
Shipem north to Philadelphia heh.....
Thanks Clare...I appreciate the help...I'll let them do their thing then.
Michael - as always you're bad!! LOL You should see the leaves on the newbies...yipeee...so excited!!
Terrific!!
I need a home for about 20 more lol!!
Ifn they dont e-bay off ill ship them to an unsuspecting party WUAHAHAHA...
As an add on to Chantells question - I am having the same issues, first year with Plumies and I am getting ready for fall and cooler temps, will they go dormant no matter what I do? I was thinking of bringing them inside now sine the temps are going down, but they will be in a "warmish" basement (we use it for a family room) and not far from light at all - I guess my question is will they "go to sleep" no matter what? Can I keep them on my lighted flower rack or do I need to put them in a room that is dark 98% of the time (but warm)?
Bright and warm to keep going
Darker and cooler to go dormant, but never 'dark'
Thank you much...:)
Never dark? Hmmm....gonna need to rethink plan "A" Wonder if my daughter would be willing to give up the top of her dresser?
LOLOL Chantell, your poor kids!!!! First the dining room table, now the dressers!!
Yeah, I know...but she just junks up the top of her dresser anyways...I think she should share...LOL
yeah never dark. who came up with that anyways??? LOL i don't know of any plants that are in the dark when dormant. no expert here though.
I didn't know about the "never dark" rule last year and put my plumies in the basement. They all died. And this is a basement that is not heated, but not overly cold either. So, I'm in the same boat. I read the links in the sticky and have not found much useful information on dormancy conditions. I may try to store them bareroot. I really don't have room in the house for them to remain potted. I haven't bought them indoors yet.
Mine are back outside as well - just realized Clare said important not to overwater at this time...yikes...left them out in yesterday's rain since I'd not watered them lately with the temps being lower.
I am not so sure about the never dark when they go dormant. I have heard of people who store them bare root in closed-in areas with no light. I think the important thing is to keep them dry.
You will need light, however, to break dormancy.
Dark promotes molds that live on the bark
Light deters mold
Dry yes, too moist no
There is a good percentage of winter rot that occurs from moisture or not enough light
Dark never!! ;^)
Looks like they'll be in my kitchen...DD's not willing to share her dresser...LOL Gee, and I thought I taught her better...personally I think they've got post traumatic stress disorder from winter time with the fungus knats...LOL
I have a solution for you guys...
Ship them down to me and my 92 degree weather will keep them nice and warm..
I promise to give them back ... i promise really.. ahhh really scout's honor ¥
What a guy...very generous of you to (cough) offer...LOL I've seen pics of your plumies!!! Mine ain't nothin' compared to what you have!!
Well whatever you do don't ship them to me or they will never bloom again. I am soooooo frustrated with my non blooming plumies. Thank goodness for my florific (is that a word?) hibiscus and gingers.
Ahh....ginger blooms!! Must be nice!! Didn't get any of those this year...next year maybe? *fingers crossed*
Ive had 3 samoan fluffs for 2 years with no blooms
They are one of the most prolific bloomers according to almost everyone.
I told my 3 samoan fluffs theyd be root stock for grafts if they didnt bloom soon.
ALL 5 TIPS HAVE BIG INFLOS NOW!! LOL!!!
I had some that bloom in one year and the next year nothing..
Must be a female plant blooms when it wants..
:)
I kid I kid...
I have a few that think winter time is time to bloom lol!!
I think I will have to stand out in the garden and scream "Bloom or you will be compost toast" .
Stubborn plummies are females? Harumph to you. :-)
They're probably male...and too busy holding the remote control to bloom!!! Now THAT'S funny!!
hehe...
darn we been busted mike..
:)
Said in love...Michael knows my twisted humor...LOL
Chantell - speaking of, have you brought your Plumies in yet? Mine are still outside and seem to be doing just fine! OR, do I need to bring 'em in now? It's been "coolish" here at night, but not cold (well, I am Norwegian, my definition of cold and the Plumies definition of cold are two totally different stories)
I still have mine out...more out of lack of space until shelving unit is up then anything else though...LOL. I would think if we start getting consistant below 50's at night...they need to come in at that point.
Mine have been in for 3 weeks now.
Sheesh what a chore.
My boys are soo tired heh.....
I have asthma guys!! you gotta help me!!!
It always works hehee.....
I am overrun and making many cuttings to sell / gift come spring.
Ill be reducing my collection to 1/2 of its current size.
Keeping my favs and multi trees.
So ill only have like 100? :^P
Low 30s here last week
70s today sheesh!!
I know...the weather's nuts...we're at 72 now....crazy!!
And Malestrom, you and I will have highs only in the 40's by the end of the week. Glad I brought everything in last month.
Ours will be in the 50's on "good" days...crazy!!
Donna,
YOU are kidding?!!! Seems like just yesterday we were waiting for your snow to melt...wasn't it? :)
I wish I was kidding!
Wow...HOW short are your summers?
