Can you find the odd ball?

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Big umbel of H. sussuela opening.... (H. camphorifolia growing up the same tree on the left). Eriostemmas seem to grow up and up and up and then start hanging down when they reach some comfort point. When they hang down, they begin to bloom. Can you see the 'wierd corona'?

Here is a pic of Dischidia sp. minidinao...lovely blue grey foliage except for the new growth...great contrast

Here is #1 cat, Boo, who thinks he is a dog and is constantly asking for a tummy rub!

And the re-arranged back porch...with the lower sun in the winter, I put my larger plants out here where they stay drier and get morning sun...

Finally my new ginger...Zingiber var. 'Milky Way'.

Carol, that is wonderful. I think we need to have an 'odd ball' picture collection. I have a BIG H. sussuela that I got from a grower in Hawaii (wink wink) in my first order last spring. I sure hope I can get it to bloom. I LOVE that flower and you make it look so easy, just growing right up a tree.... Oh, I like the cat too! My kitty chases her tail just like a dog would do. She will do it so long she gets the whirleys and falls over. The 3 dogs just look at her and shake their heads.

God bless, -joanne

Carol, I love the sussuela flower. (Note to self: must buy a bigger house to fulfill all my Hoya gotta-haves...)

And Boo - I got chills!! My Mom had a pure black cat for many years they called "Boo-boo". She was quite a character. If you had a glass of wine and set it down, she was dippin' her little ol' pitty-paw in there and taking a lick-lick, lick-lick, lick-lick. Mmmm - she loved her wine! Preferred white, if I remember correctly! She was a fat-sassy girl and I adored her. And I had my own kitty who I swear was a dog reincarnated. Samantha followed me around like a puppy, loved to be held, cuddled, kissed, and she actually fetched paper wads. I lost her last year at the ripe old age of 20. I miss her terribly...

Carol, the ginger is really amazing, I've never seen one that had such short bloom stalks. Is that typical of the plant?

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Oh, Denise...we do lose them and it is SO sad. Boo has a sister named Spooker....they are identical except for the fact that Spooker is afraid of the world and Boo could give a hoot! I DREAD the time when we will lose our animals.... Neither will eat until their bowls have been filled by (guess who?)...and I do the "omni gati, santi negri".... Except when I am gone and Bob is alone...he just says "Eat, dammmmmmut"...both work.

Joanne...keep your H. sussuela WARM and with a lot of light. They are terrestials...even when growing up a tree they are also down on the ground creeping along looking for another tree!!! They grow UP until their head are in the sun (an element only they know is perfect), then they hang down and bloom. They will hang down until they get to the ground and start that creeping stuff again. I swear these must be the vines Tarzan swung on!!!. It seems to me that climbing is important to them...

Have any of you guys bloomed them indoors without all that tree stuff?

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Mark...it is of many Zingibers. And they die back in winter (whenever that is???)....like the Gobbas.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Here is the full on of the umbel.... I have never seen a corona that stayed all closed up!!!

That corona is too freaky! Who cares, what a gorgeous bloom - you lucky lady!
I am, of course, jealous of your living arrangements!!

Hi Carol
I have the ginger but not that hoya. It is a beauty, got to get me one of those!
I have several of the zingibers as they are really neat. You can shampoo your hair with the cones of the zercumbet (hmmm spelling) the red one. Oh dear I know how you are a stickler for spelling but it escapes me. I am sure you know the one.

Boo sounds like a big ham!

Bea

Beautiful flowers and plants Carol. H.Sussela is simply breath taking! And that closed up corona is so neat. Your Boo fur flower is just lovely too. One of mine likes belly rubs too, but only if you scratch her head at the same time, and only if she's on her little rug so she can pull a corner of it over her head...gosh cats are strange!

Bea...the 'shampoo ginger' REALLY is terrific as a shampoo/conditioner!! I have used it and often still do. Paul Mitchell came out with his product based on it. I 'think' it is Zingeber zurumbet... my spelling is awful!!!

Yes...it IS true that 'Dogs have masters and Cats have staff'!

Carol - what a beautiful flower!! How amazing it must be to walk outside, look up into the trees and see these flowers!
My cat, Gizmo, is in charge here, too. It's quite hysterical to watch our 170 pound St. Bernard, and our 120 pound chocolate lab walk the perimeters of the house, on tip toes, just to avoid her!!

Carol,
I just love the color of H. sussuela bloom. It sure is beautiful, and so is Dischidia sp. minidinao. Adding both to must have list.
Thanks for sharing the pictures.

Carol, My H. pubicalyx 'Royal Hawaiian Purple' tends to put off flowers with strange coronas. Here is a photo. Do other hoya do this? -joanne

I'll try it again.

Joanne;; the Hawaiin Royal Purple just as the plant we call chimera, is a mutation with a double set of chromosomes. They can mutate into some very odd leaves and flowers both. The colors can be affected as can the floral parts. Since these plants appear in nature this way, we can't blame this one on mans intervention. Some turn out beautiful while others can be absolutely monstrous looking. Most are like mules, they are usually sterile and can't reproduce by any other method than by taking cuttings.

love the pics...i agree with susan...hawaii..sigh...it must be nice...soon winter will be here where i live and i dislike the cold...

Annie W, thanks for the info. RHP is one of my favorites. I guess I just like the weird and unusual :~) Is 'Royal Hawaiian Purple' or 'Chimera' correct? I purchased it as chimera then when I posted a picture was told that was not correct, it was RHP. Just curious, it really does not make a difference to me, but I like to state things the correct way. On 'other' web sites you get flayed to the bone if you make a mistake! I don't worry about that here (thank you God :~)

BTW, anyone have an idea why my pictures didn't post? -joanne
