Hoya seeds.

Brisbane, Australia

Because I grow all my Hoyas outdoors, I suppose there is a reasonable chance some pollination might take place with all the birds and the bees. Does anyone have a photo of a pollenated bloom with seeds forming. Also has anyone had experience growing Hoyas from seed successfully? I was wondering also what are the best conditions for growing seeds, what mix etc? should I ever get any.

Thanks Roy.

I get lots of seedpods on my H. australis growing outside...and I just found two pods on my cv. Sunrise!!! I haven't any pictures, but will try to get one tomorrow. The best thing to do is to put some tape around them so that when they split open, they won't burst open (as they are want to do).

I use my regular potting mixture in one of those nifty plastic containers I buy cut up fruit in....or baby spinach...clear plastic with a lid. I dampen the potting mixture and smear the seeds togther with the fluff that acts as the parachute to carry it off on top of the mixture, cover it and put it somewhere warm. They should germinate in 2 to 3 days. They need to be VERY fresh...they don't keep. I have transplanted them at various stages of development and it works every time...sometimes planting them that way you get a bunching of seedlings all together.

Try to remember what was blooming at the same time that the plant producing the follicles so that you can narrow down the cross. Australis has always been self pollinated, I am pretty sure. cv. Sunrise grows around a bunch of H. lacunosas so I have no clue...she is already a cross between H. lacunosa X H. obscura.

Hope this helps.
