Refrigerate bulbs?

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)

I bought some perennial glad bulbs. I won't be planting them till next spring. Should I store them in the crisper drawer of the refregerator or in the basement or where?

Thanks,

Brenda

I would be suprised if glads enjoyed the fridge, they are from warm weather climates.

You can go ahead and plant them now.

On another thread I saw this advice:

"I put them in a covered cardboard box on the basement floor until Spring. They will shrink a bit. Be sure they are not wet. "

Glads don't need a cold period like other fall planted bulbs. The poster above 'SarahsKeeper' is in the same zone as you (and I) zone 5.

Dmj - I think the advice about planting now is only valid if you are zone 7 or above.

I find that in zone7 it is better to dig in the fall, and store under the crawl space under the house,in a box(I use a fruit basket),covered with peat mose.Mike

Don't plant Glads now in a zone 5!! Plant in the spring after last frost. Mine are still in the ground now, planted late May early June, I am just waiting for the green foliage to die back, then i dig them up, shake off all the dirt. Put them in a dry, frost free place to dry in a single layer. When dry, place in airy container and place in a dry, cool...not cold spot. I use the nylon onion bags to store mine and place them in the basement away from the windows, in a cool dry (not damp) dark to semi-dark place. I have had the same Glad bulbs for 5 years using this method.
Here's a few of the 5 yr. olds....

Glads wouldn't likely make it through winter in zone 5 but they will do fine in our zone 7b through winter in the ground without digging up.

The glads I bought are the kind that can survive a freeze. That is why I ordered them. I don't want to dig glads in the fall. I want to plant them and forget about them. I think I'll just put them on the lowest shelf near the floor in the basement and hope I don't forget about them come spring. Ya'll remind me OK? Ha!

Loon,
I tried the "Hardy" Glads here, twice....they werent hardy enough for Maine. Hope you have better luck than did!

Thanks for the warning. I used to plant glads at our city house downstate and I wouldn't dig them up and they would come back. I think it was because we were having warmer winters for a while.

These will go into a raised bed. If they make it great. If not then it's no big deal I guess.

Loon, I can't remember anything if I don't put it in my Outlook calendar. That way, everyday, whatever I need to do is right in front of me and won't go away until I a) do it, b) change the date or c) cancel it. I wouldn't remember to pay bills or go to the dentist without it, let alone handle my work appts. I have taken several things from Walter Reeves gardening calendar and added them to mine. I could put myself a reminder to remind you to plant your glads!

LOL, outlook calendar runs my life, too!

Thanks!! Just what I need. D-Mail me when it's time to plant my glads.
