Heres one of 3 seedling hybrids that I grew this summer. The new small leaves along the stems and the undersides of the older leaves are all red / brown looking.
The tops of the leaves are red veined. so now what??? any one seen this in a tropical hibiscus before?? I sure haven't.

Kyle, I've seen it many times. I've just bought a new computer and I don't have all info saved in it so I can't surf through mails to look for the reason but I recall that is a temporary problem due to the lack of a minor element, maybe molibedene or mangenese.

Carlos, thanks I was thinking WOW something different, but oh well. I will add some extra minor elements to their diet. Only seems to happen on this one cross.

Kyle,
I've seen this before. The plant that had the reddish underside leaves was most evident when the plant was young and with time the new leaves turned solid green. I too thought it was a genetic variation, but if it was it didn't stay once the seedling reached 2 years old.

interesting info.

Interesting, I sent all my seedlings last year to my sis except one. Most all of them have the same leaves as you have pictured above. I thought this was strange as well. I'm glad to hear it is normal.
