Landscaping suggestions?

Fond Du Lac, WI(Zone 5a)

My husband and I bought this house a couple months ago. It's a complete remodeler. For now, we are working on making the inside nice. Next year we'll work on the landscaping. We need to make it pleasant to make up for the house's serious lack of charm!

The evergreens will be going. They are all 30+ years old and look like they've seen better days. So will the lovely overgrown bushes in front of the door (who plants bushes in front of a door?!) I'd like to surround the house with bushes and perennials. Something low maintenance. I've bought two tinkerbell lilac bushes that I want to incorporate and a flowering crabapple tree. I also have a white peegee hydrangea and a dwarf korean lilac that I don't have to include but they are available.

We would like to paint the house gray, paint the trim white, keep the black shutters and maybe get a dark red front door. Paint the orange bricks on the bottom some other color...

At this point, I'm just looking at landscaping books. This site has also been a great resource too. I'd be interested in any suggestions!

Thanks!
