My dad's lemon tree has tons of scale, but he doesn't want to hurt the butterflies? Is there anything I can do? I've washed it before and spent several hours scraping them off but it's just not working.
Is there anything I can do?
Can I do anything o get rid of scale but not butterflies?
You can apply a dormant oil in late winter before the butterflies are out. It smothers the overwintering scale and evaporates quickly, leaving little residue.
wonderful, where can I get this stuff and are there any preferred brands/etc?
I have a product from Lowe's called Lilly Miller Vegol Year-Rround Pesticidal Oil. It's 96% Canola oil, contains no petroleum products, and I think I found it in the organic area. It's for dormant and growing seasons and for roses, flowers, fruits and veggies.
There's a million products, this is just the one I use :>).
thanks so much, killing scale makes my dad very happy (almost as happy as killing aphids on his don juans)!!
What's a don juan?
a beautiful long stemmed red rose. you should see them, gorgeous
Oh, I bet it's divine, do you have a pic?
Unfortunately I haven't found a rose, other than shrub roses, that likes our heat, does DJ do well in the heat?
My dad is in N. Alabama (8a) and it gets very hot but not very humid. It seems to love the dryer heat and his plants are in very full sun from about 11 on. We have had the best success with all our roses when we keep them just under the eve of the house so they don't get to much dew at night, it seems to really cut down on the black spot and other types of mildew.
But no I don't think don juan could get too much sun or heat, as long as you watered him.
I don't have a digital pic for you but don juans are frequently used as your classic long stemmed red roses that you would buy from the florist.
